Andrew Garfield is inheriting the red-and-blue tights from Tobey Maguire as he takes over as Hollywood’s Spider-Man but the 27-year-old costar of “The Social Network” has worn the famous costume before.
“On Halloween. Bedtimes. Tuesdays. When I was auditioning, my parents sent me a photo of me as a kid in the Spider-Man costume. I gave it to my agent, and my agent slipped it to the studio as they were making their decision,” Garfield tells Glenn Whipp for The Envelope, the Los Angeles Times specialty website for Hollywood awards coverage. “What skinny kid wouldn’t love that character? I can’t overstate enough when you start to actually identify what’s happened and you go, ‘Yeah, I did dream of being Spider-Man when I was a kid.’ I’m trying not to lose my mind about it. But it’s not superficial to me. It’s not frothy or frivolous.”
Garfield is now at work on the set of the Sony reboot of “Spider-Man,” with the aptly named director Marc Webb taking over the Marvel Comics mythology from Sam Raimi, whose trilogy racked up almost $3.5 billion at theaters. That box-office history – and a publishing heritage that dates back to 1962 – can be a bit smothering if Garfield dwells on it too much. ”The overriding theme of the comic is: With great power comes great responsibility,” Garfield said. “And, yes, I feel a huge sense of pressure and responsibility.”

Spiderman was my favorite superhero growing up. He is witty, self-deprecating, fearless and unique in the comics. I don't why he didn't translate well into films. I, for one, hate Sam Raimi's Spiderman films. Tobey Maguire was too emo. That was only one side of Spiderman. I'm not even going to bother seeing sensitive looking British boy as Peter Parker. Awful casting in my opinion. This is the same superhero who calls Wolverine "Wolvie" in the crossover comic books. THey just couldn't capture you Spidey.
It makes me appreciate what C. Nolan did with Batman all the more.
Really kind of shocked on the choice.
