Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed zombie comic series “The Walking Dead” is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Created by writer Kirkman and artist Tony Moore, the monthly comic about a ragtag group of zombie apocalypse survivors was first released by Image Comics in October 2003. Since then, “The Walking Dead” has won an Eisner Award for best continuing series and has spawned spinoff books, video games and a hit television series on AMC, becoming one of the most well-known zombie tales in pop culture.

“The Walking Dead” 10th anniversary celebrations at Comic-Con International — the massive entertainment expo which runs July 18-21 at the San Diego Convention Center — will include zombie costume contests, a zombie makeup station, celebrity appearances and a booth to play “The Walking Dead” video game.

Walking Dead“It’s hard to believe the growth and expansion ‘The Walking Dead’ has undergone since I began writing the comic 10 years ago,” Kirkman said in a statement. “This entire event is a thank-you to fans of ‘The Walking Dead universe.’ ”

The Comic-Con event will also feature the unveiling of the “Zombie Survival Machine,” a custom-designed 2013 Hyundai Veloster built by car fabrication shop Galpin Auto Sports to withstand a zombie apocalypse. Kirkman designed last year’s model, and “Walking Dead” fans can use the Walking Dead Chop Shop configurator app on the Comic-Con show floor to try their hand at designing their own digital Zombie Survival Machine. Submitted designs will be entered into a contest, and the winning submission will be constructed and unveiled at New York Comic-Con in October.

The Walking Dead Escape” is also returning to San Diego’s Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres) for Comic-Con this year, pitting participants (dubbed “survivors”) against “walkers” (people in zombie makeup) in an obstacle course.

More than 130,000 professionals and enthusiasts in the realms of sci-fi, fantasy, video games, comics and horror are expected to converge on San Diego’s waterfront convention center for Comic-Con. The expo features panels, film and TV screenings, portfolio reviews, merchant booths and a masquerade, and in recent years has expanded to take over San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.

Stay tuned to Hero Complex for more convention updates.
