Thor, Loki, Captain America and Iron Man cosplayers mill around the escalators in the Los Angeles Convention Center lobby on Saturday morning during Stan Lee’s Comikaze. A group of X-Men gather on the stairs, and a dozen people dressed as “Star Wars” bounty hunter Boba Fett pose together, wielding their blasters for the cameras.

Thousands of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and comic book fans gathered in downtown Los Angeles this weekend for Comikaze, the homegrown pop culture expo that wraps up Sunday.

The convention, now in its third year, featured panels, screenings, game tournaments, merchants and guest speakers from the genre entertainment world. Comikaze began as a passion project for Regina Carpinelli, chief executive of Comikaze Entertainment, and her siblings after ticketing complications kept them from attending San Diego’s Comic-Con International.

“We were terribly bummed,” Carpinelli told Hero Complex. “We thought, ‘There needs to be a show that everyone can get into, that everyone can afford, that is totally awesome.’ We put our heart and soul into creating this geek smorgasbord.”

Since its inception, Comikaze has grown from 35,000 attendees the first year to 45,000 last year, with more expected to attend this weekend, partly due to the convention’s fledgling partnership with Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee’s Pow Entertainment, Cassandra Peterson (otherwise known as Elvira), and events company Advanstar Communications.

In addition to bringing his collection of Marvel movie props and memorabilia from films including “Iron Man,” “Captain America” and “Thor,” Lee used Comikaze as his platform to announce several new projects, including a new Disney Publishing comic based on the Chinese zodiac (to be written by Lee and Stuart Moore and illustrated by Andie Tong) and the cast of his upcoming animated movie trilogy “Mighty 7,” including Armie Hammer, Christian Slater, Mayim Bialik, Sean Astin, Darren Criss, Teri Hatcher and Flea.

In addition to Lee and Elvira, Comikaze guests lined up for autographs from comic convention staples Lou Ferrigno, Dean Cain, LeVar Burton, Edward James Olmos and others. “The Walking Dead” alumnus Michael Rooker took pictures with fans. But the longest line by far on Saturday was for a photo with “Evil Dead” actor and cult horror icon Bruce Campbell.

Los Angeles Times photographer Francine Orr spent Saturday at the downtown convention center. Click through the gallery above for her look at Comikaze cosplayers.
