Andrew Garfield’s ‘Spider-Man’ finds his Gwen Stacy [updated]

It’s official: Actress Emma Stone has landed the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in Marc Webb’s new “Spider-Man” reboot due out in 2012.
Though perhaps not as famous to moviegoers as her counterpart, Mary Jane Watson, in the comics, Gwen Stacy, the daughter of a police official, is Peter Parker’s girlfriend. In some ways, she is to Mary Jane as Lana Lang is to Lois Lane in the Superman mythology — not the most famous love interest but the compelling “could have been” figure in the hero’s romantic life. (In one classic storyline in the comics she was killed while Spider-Man battled the Green Goblin.)
The move to prominently feature the character in his film signals perhaps yet another way Webb is trying to distinguish his movie from Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man.” [UPDATE: Gwen did appear in "Spider-Man 3"-- she was portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard -- but Mary Jane was still front and center.]
In a release issued Tuesday by Sony Pictures, Webb stated, “The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde.”
