The Twilight saga’s “Breaking Dawn” is the conclusion of the incredibly successful and beloved vampire book franchise. With all the anticipation for the film version, which will be divided into two parts (the first half hits theaters in November), there are also a lot of questions. Fans — many of whom had been waiting in line at Comic-Con International since Monday afternoon — are eager to see the wedding and honeymoon of their favorite couple, Bella and Edward (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson) and the subsequent birth of their half-vampire, half-human baby.
Director Bill Condon and cast were on hand at Comic-Con on Thursday morning, presenting the first panel in the San Diego Convention Center’s massive Hall H to share some details of the final two movies — though few surprising secrets were actually revealed.
“This movie is all third act, and the second half of Part 1 is like a really cool horror movie,” said Condon, referencing specifically the very violent birth that makes up the end of the film. “I quickly imprinted on the material.”
Condon and crew showed some footage, including a moment from the honeymoon scene, where just the shot of Edward untucking his shirt and a glimpse of the matrimonial bed drew hoots and hollers from the crowd. The scene also showed Bella panicking in the honeymoon suite as she anticipates her night ahead.
“The most secretive scene of the movie was the wedding,” Stewart said. “It was Secret Service style. The crew was really cranky — no cellphones, no cameras. And we just thanked them. If this dress gets out on the Internet, I’ll just die.”
Condon, who did not direct the earlier “Twilight” films and is perhaps best known for the musical “Dreamgirls,” also unveiled a scene (not in the book) that revealed Jacob the werewolf (played by Taylor Lautner) confronting his wolf pack over his decision to part with them and protect the Cullen family.
“In the beginning of this film, Jacob is young, immature and madly in love with Bella,” Lautner said from the dais of the 6,500-seat hall. “Then he gets his heart crushed. He doesn’t handle it well. But he’s forced to mature and take a stand. I’m super excited about his journey and I can’t wait for you all to see it.”
Fans seemed thrilled with the footage, but the energy level in the room appeared a bit more contained than it has been at past Comic-Cons. The three leads were on stage, including Stewart, who has been a tireless ambassador for the franchise — a fact Condon noted in a press conference before the panel. “There is no bigger fan of these books than Kristen. She was constantly pushing to capture the feeling she felt the first time she read the books.”
The fans still fawned over the cast, with one offering Pattinson a CD and another declaring her love for Lautner. Earning the biggest laughs was the twentysomething fan who simply wanted to gush over Pattinson.
“I want to tell you how pleasantly surprised I am by your back muscles that we saw in the trailer,” she said. “I speak for all of us when I say yum, yum yum.”
