Avengers vs. X-Men: Fans choose sides and mutants reign

If the reaction from the crowd at WonderCon’s Avengers vs. X-Menpanel is any indication, the children of the atom may crush Earth’s mightiest heroes in the upcoming 12-issue event series from Marvel written by the team of Brian Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron and Jonathan Hickman and drawn by John Romita, Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert.

“Event” is the operative word here, as not only will the book (and its offshoots) cross into various titles and spotlight huge battles, it’s drawing in more than 1,100 comic shops worldwide to participate in special Avengers vs. X-Men launch parties on April 3. If you’re in L.A., Meltdown Comics is one of the participants. It was also mentioned at the WonderCon panel that fans would be able to pick up exclusive giveaways.

That panel, moderated by Marvel’s  director of communications, publishing and digital media Arune Singh, was populated by senior vice president of publishing/executive editor Tom Brevoort, head of TV Jeph Loeb and writer Mark Waid.  Before getting to the meat of the discussion, the group took the opportunity to hype a few of the new Marvel ReEvolution digital initiatives, including: Marvel Infinite Comics (a new comic book format using tablets and smartphones to tell stories), and Marvel AR (an augmented reality app that lets you scan books and other merch for digital extras).

After that bit of business, they presented a slideshow of comic book panels and covers, starting with a pre-AvX event, the currently printing X-Sanction storyline featuring Cable. Following that, the panel went into AvX, showing many of the variant covers and upcoming matchups between individual heroes on each of the teams. Cyclops vs. Captain America, Thor and Ms. Marvel vs. the Phoenix, Red Hulk vs. Namor — each image eliciting a gasp and a murmur or a cheer from the overflowing room. Responses were perhaps a little heightened given that MTV and Marvel were filming the panel for a television special about Avengers vs. X-Men.

The room was decidedly pro-X Men, and each question posed centered on who would be in each team, the matchups and why one team would beat the other.  Instead of listing the numerous questions that followed, Hero Complex stuck around to present their responses directly, asking the question: Which side do you fall on in the Avengers vs. X-Men debate?
