“Star Trek” fans who can’t wait until J. J. Abrams’ sequel hits theaters in May can get a sneak peek at the film with a new “Star Trek Into Darkness” app.

The app, which launches later this month, features audio and image recognition, allowing users to scan certain “Star Trek” content in print and on television in order to unlock — you guessed it — more “Star Trek” videos, images and wallpapers. The first unlockable content will be unveiled during the second quarter of the Super Bowl on Feb. 3 during a “Star Trek Into Darkness” TV spot.

Fans can sign up to download the app, which was announced Monday during the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, at StarTrekMovie.com/CES.

UPDATE: App enrolls fans in Starfleet Academy

The sequel to Abrams’ 2009 re-imagining of the classic sci-fi series is due in theaters May 17, but some fans already got a glimpse of the film thanks to a nine-minute preview that screened before select Imax showings of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”

The film features returning cast members Chris Pine as the swaggering Capt. James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov and John Cho as Hikaru Sulu. But the real buzz around the film has centered on Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the film’s mystery villain.

Some fans seem convinced that Cumberbatch will appear as Khan Noonien Singh, while others predict he will play Gary Mitchell, a dangerous villain with psionic powers.

Damon Lindelof, one of the film’s writers, told Hero Complex that the filmmakers intend to keep the character’s identity a mystery for as long as possible.

“Benedict doesn’t even know who he’s playing,” he joked.
