I just got off the phone with Chloe Moretz, who is working on the set of “30 Rock” in snowy Manhattan. After talking about next Tuesday’s release of “Let Me In” on home video (check back for that story early next week), I had to ask her about “The Hunger Games.”
There are legions of fans who would love to see the “Kick-Ass” actress starring in the role of fiery Katniss Everdeen as Hollywood moves forward with the screen adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novels about a grim future where teenagers are forced to fight to the death in a televised contest that plays out like some nightmarish mash-up of the CBS series “Survivor” and “The Running Man.” The real allure of the books, however, is seeing the world through the eyes of Katniss, one of the young contestants who happens to have a noble heart, remarkable resolve and fierce resourcefulness.
“Yeah, I read all of the books,” the 13-year-old said enthusiastically. “I’d die to play Katniss. It’s such a cool role.”
Moretz is one of the favorites for the part — at least in the court of public opinion, that is. Also mentioned on fan sites are two young actresses with Oscar nominations on their resumes: Saoirse Ronan of “Atonement” and Hailee Steinfeld of “True Grit.” I asked Moretz whether she is in the mix for the role and she seemed to consider her words carefully before answering. “We haven’t been in talks about it yet.”
