Tickets for “Divergent” — the dystopian adventure movie based on the bestselling book trilogy by Veronica Roth — will go on sale March 4, Summit Entertainment announced Thursday.

The film, which stars Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet and Theo James among others, is due in theaters March 21. Moviegoers who purchase tickets on Fandango or MovieTickets.com on March 4 will receive a free downloadable copy of Roth’s book, and those who purchase before March 21 can be entered into a sweepstakes for a walk-on role in the film’s sequel, “Insurgent,” which is in the works for March 2015.

In “Divergent,” Woodley (“The Descendants,” “The Spectacular Now”) plays heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior. The story is set in a dystopian future version of Chicago, in which people are tested and divided into five factions based on their personalities and virtues. Tris’ personality test reveals she is divergent, or has an aptitude for multiple factions and doesn’t fall neatly into one category — a dangerous trait in the rigidly divided society.

She hides her divergence and decides to join the faction based on bravery, where she meets a group of tattooed warriors including love interest Four, played by James. Her choice sees her ziplining, jumping on and off trains, knife-throwing and facing off against other kids.

“It’s not just about young people figuring their way through life,” Woodley told Hero Complex. “It’s about young people being in really adult situations, and they’re treated like adults, which is how adolescents are these days. Everybody’s incredibly smart, and there’s not a lot of movies that do that age range justice.”

In addition to Woodley and James, the film stars Winslet as leader Jeanine Matthews, Woodley’s “A Fault in Our Stars” costar Ansel Elgort as Tris’ brother Caleb, Zoë Kravitz as her friend Christina and Ashley Judd as her mother, Natalie Prior.

“Divergent” is directed by Neil Burger. Robert Schwentke (“The Time Traveler’s Wife,” “Flightplan”) is slated to direct “Insurgent,” which will film in Atlanta and Chicago.

The third film in the series based on Roth’s novels, “Allegiant,” is slated to open on March 18, 2016.
