‘Game of Thrones’: George R.R. Martin teases ‘Winds of Winter’

April 02, 2015 | 1:29 p.m.

George R.R. Martin keeps his promises.

After announcing on his blog that he was scaling back on convention appearances, as well as forgoing scripting any episodes for the sixth season of “Game of Thrones” in order to focus more on writing “The Winds of Winter,” Martin delivered a gift to his “A Song of Ice and Fire” fans in the form of an excerpt from the long-anticipated next installment of his popular fantasy saga.

(Those not caught up with series should beware — there are spoilers below.)

Martin’s new segment was posted online under the title “Alayne,” the alias Sansa Stark has adopted since escaping from King’s Landing (and her diminutive husband) to the Eyrie with Petyr Baelish, posing as his daughter after the events of the Purple Wedding.

Sansa fans can rejoice because this is the first chapter narrated from her point of view since 2005’s “A Feast for Crows,” the fourth novel in the series.

The chapter opens with a scene between Sansa and her cousin, Lord Robert Arryn, who has no idea of her true identity, and gives readers a look at her life at the Vale.

Sansa, it seems, has not been able to shake her past fully, as she does reminisce about her life and status as a Stark, but as Alayne Stone she has been sharpening her cunning like a Valyrian steel sword to advance some schemes of her own. It also seems that Littlefinger has been coaching her on using her cleverness to seduce men—specifically Ser Harrold Hardyng, the heir to the Vale.

Fans of the TV incarnation of Sansa have a little longer to wait, but they can look forward to the “big change for her this season” that Sophie Turner teased in a previous interview with Hero Complex.

“Game of Thrones” will return for its fifth season on April 12.

One Response to ‘Game of Thrones’: George R.R. Martin teases ‘Winds of Winter’

  1. jeff says:

He made dozens of promises to his fans about when he would finish the series, and broke every one of them while jetsetting around the world to attend conventions, and when anyone suggested that he should hurry up he would sulk and throw a fit to the press.

But as soon as the TV show rejected his suggestion that they spin their wheels producing prequels while he continued to screw around, and told him that they fully intended to finish the series without him – suddenly he's in a rush.

Screw him, and screw his books. I would never buy another one, and I'm kind of mad that he even indirectly profits from my watching the TV show. I hope he never manages to finish the series himself, and his reputation goes to shit when he dies – so all the credit goes to the producers, who have a work ethic and sense of responsibility to the fans.
