Talk about just desserts.

Last night’s episode of “Game of Thrones,” “The Lion and the Rose,” elicited a rousing celebration from Twitter; as the tweets piled up around the #purplewedding hashtag, it was clear that the death of a key character at the wedding of King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) produced one long, slow clap from the Internet.

If you still haven’t seen the latest twist in HBO’s fantasy series, you should stop reading now.

The highlights? Well, the wedding was a white-knuckled affair even before Joffrey was fatally poisoned. Indulging his own twisted ideas of entertainment, he’d brought out a troupe of dwarfs to act out the so-called Battle of the Five Armies, referencing both Ned Stark and Robb Stark’s murder to the horror of Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). Not content with this base-level humiliation, Joffrey baited his uncle, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), calling him his cup-bearer, pouring wine on his head and demanding that he “kneel before your king.” New bride Margaery, by way of distraction, cried out, “Look, the pie!”

Soon, she’s feeding her husband some cake, which Joffrey washes down with wine. A few coughs and sputters later, and Joffrey meets his glorious end — choking, bleeding from the nose and in his last breaths, pointing his finger at Tyrion, still clutching the goblet in shock.

Ever the fierce lioness, Cersei (Lena Headey) demands her brother be taken prisoner immediately. Expect some bad times ahead for the Master of Coin.

QUIZ: Test your ‘Game of Thrones’ knowledge

Following is a selection of Twitter reactions, including a Passover-themed tweet from Michael Eisner and a little speculation on who is really responsible for King Joffrey’s death. There are so many people who’d want Joffrey dead, it’s hard to pick just one suspect.

Let the accusations — or would it be congratulations? — fly.

#purple wedding! Yeah! Wow, I didn't expect it to feel so good, being the compassionate soul I am. But Joffrey deserved it and 10X more. I'm hoping it was Sansa getting her revenge, surely not Tyrion. I didn't pick up on the fact the musicians were playing the Rains of Castamere AGAIN! I didn't expect them to use that warning from the Red Wedding a second time……but heck, it's ok because we are finally rid of Joffrey. Now we will see what's coming in the ongoing fight for the Iron Throne. I will be praying for Tyrion's liberation.
