To honor the 75th anniversary of Batman’s debut, DC is offering a new special edition take on “Detective Comics” No. 27 — the 1939 issue were it all began.

Hero Complex readers can check out the cover of the issue, designed by Chip Kidd with a script by bestselling author Brad Meltzer, as well as a special timeline poster that illustrates some of the most significant milestones in Batman’s storied history.

Check them out in the gallery above or by clicking on the links to the larger images below.

The free “Detective Comics” No. 27 also includes a far-future-set story written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Sean Murphy, and cover art by Greg Capullo and FCO Plascencia with the front of the 1939 original in the background. Meltzer and artist Bryan Hitch modernize that historic issue’s Bill Kane-drawn and Bill Finger-scripted story. Their new take and Snyder and Murphy’s contribution first appeared in a 96-page special DC released in January.

Both the free comic and the poster will be available at bookstores and comic book shops on July 23, which has been designated as Batman Day.

The poster leaves few milestones unturned, covering character introductions and multimedia forays, from Robin’s introduction and Batgirl’s debut to the Nolan-era film trilogy and massively popular “Arkham” video game series.

Batman Day festivities will also include a mask giveaway, where fans can pick between a series of four masks designed by comic book artist Ryan Sook that showcase a variety of the character’s iconic looks.

[For the record, 3:10 p.m. June 5: An earlier version of this post said that the timeline poster would be given away in stores. The promotional image won’t be commercially available.]
