Sonic the Hedgehog is speeding back into pop culture with an upcoming film, a TV series and now a new comic book series.

The first pages of “Sonic Boom” are being unveiled at New York Comic Con this week, but Hero Complex readers get an early sneak peek. Check out the preview pages in the gallery above.

“Sonic Boom,” by writer Ian Flynn (“Mega Man,” “Sonic Universe”) with art by Evan Stanley, Rick Bryant, Jack Morelli and Matt Herms, features new character designs for the blue speedster and his zany friends, as well as several new characters, such as Sticks the Badger. The comic ties into a new “Sonic Boom” TV series on Cartoon Network and a new video game for the Nintendo WiiU and 3DS systems.

“Boom,” from Archie Action comics — home to the “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Sonic Universe” titles, among others — aims to wed action and humor, with plenty of gags and physical comedy, said series editor Paul Kaminski in a written statement.

“While Archie’s other Sonic titles are more a super hero action-drama, the ‘Sonic Boom’ comic series is geared around self-contained, accessible stories,” Kaminski said, comparing the series’ sensibility to a cool note being passed around an elementary school classroom.

“Sonic Boom” No. 1 hits shelves Oct. 29, in time for the “Sonic Boom” Cartoon Network series premiere on Nov. 8 and the game release on Nov. 11. The first issue features cover art by Patrick Spaziante and four-part collector covers from series artists Stanley, Bryant and Herms.

The comic arrives after news earlier this summer that a Sonic movie is in the works. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet are bringing the blue hedgehog to the big screen in a hybrid computer-animated/live-action feature, produced by Neal H. Moritz through his Original Film banner and Marza’s Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi.
