Free Comic Book Day arrives Saturday, with more than 2,000 participating comic book shops readying their annual blowout of gratis titles and in-store appearances across the country.

Marvel’s planning to release a complimentary issue of “Guardians of the Galaxy” that will tease to a game-changing event for Spider-Man, while DC is launching a new series with “The New 52: Futures End” No. 0, which marks Batman Beyond’s debut in the New 52 universe. (The series will continue its weekly run with issue No. 1 set to hit stands Wednesday.)

In all, more than 60 titles will be made available at no cost: among them, Dark Horse will release a complimentary issue of “Avatar: The Last Airbender”; Archie Comics will offer “Archie Digest” No. 1, which features a new introduction to the Riverdale gang; and IDW will offer a free issue of “V-Wars”  to fans.

Now in its 12th year, the event has grown in size and scale, but it traces its origins to a simple concept, according to Joe Field, the owner of Flying Colors Comics in Concord, Calif.

“I noticed a long line of people outside my store. The line was for Baskin-Robbins’ Free Scoop Night — and I thought to myself, ‘Comics are way cooler than ice cream! We should be able to do something bigger and better than Free Scoop Night,’” Field told Hero Complex.

Fans in Southern California will have an array of events to attend on Saturday. Top Cow CEO and creator Marc Silvestri will appear at Hollywood’s Golden Apple to tout his latest series, “Rise of the Magi,” while cartoonist Scott Shaw will hand out Bongo Comics and raffle off hand-drawn sketches.

Over at Meltdown Comics, Felipe Smith (“Ghost Rider”), Chris Burnham (“Batman Incorporated”) and writer Merrill Hagan, who is perhaps best known for his work on “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law,” will be on hand, as will Yehudi Mercado (“Pantalones, TX”), Tom Pinchuk (“Max Steel”) and a collection of local “crafters, zinesters, diyers, artists and vendors.”

“Scratch9″ creator Rob Worley will travel to the Sherman Oaks Earth 2-location, with Silvestri, Todd “Brocasso” Harris and Justin Rodrigues also turning in appearances. The retailer’s Northridge location will host Worley and DC Comics writer Sterling Gates with his “famous writer sketches.”

Richard Starkings (“Elephantmen”), Rafael Navarro (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Sonambulo”), Jeff Stokely (“Six Gun Gorilla,” “The Reason For Dragons”), Mike O’Hare (“He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”), Phil Ortiz (“Simpsons Comics”) will meet fans at  The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach. (The shop is donating a portion of the day’s proceeds to support the Bill Mantlo Project.)

Meanwhile, the artists and writers of “The Simpsons” comics will travel to Metro Entertainment in Santa Barbara for an autograph session. Clone Trooper Commander Voltaire will also be on hand for photos.
