Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, Wolverine and more Marvel superheroes are teaming up against supervillain Loki in “Marvel Universe Live,” a live-action arena stunt show set to begin touring this summer.
Dates for the 85-city tour show were announced Tuesday, with the show kicking off in Tampa, Fla., in July before making its official world premiere at New York City’s Barclays Center on Aug. 13.
Dates for Los Angeles performances have yet to be announced, but scheduled California stops include San Jose from March 20-22, 2015, Anaheim from March 27-29, Ontario from April 9-12 and San Diego from April 16-19. Ticket prices vary between dates and venues, but range from about $40 to over $175.
Feld Entertainment, which is producing the arena show, and Marvel Entertainment also offered a glimpse at the show’s plot, promising “the most Marvel characters ever assembled in one production,” according to a news release.
The show centers on the “Cosmic Cube” (the Tesseract-powered device fans will recognize from “The Avengers” and “Captain America”), shattered into pieces by Thor to protect its powers from falling into the hands of evil-doers. Loki devises a scheme to clone its powers, threatening to destroy Earth and the universe. Marvel’s mightiest, including the X-Men, Spider-Man and the Avengers, team against Loki and other supervillains — Doctor Octopus, Madame Hydra, Red Skull and Electro among them — to save the day.
Helmed by Emmy winner Shanda Sawyer as director, writing duo Adam Wilson and Melanie Wilson LaBracio and stunt coordinator Andy Armstrong (who served as stunt coordinator for the 2011 Marvel film “Thor”), among others, the roughly 50-performer show culled its cast from martial artists, aerial performers, stunt people and more. Casting director Jessica Ferris also emphasized the actors’ ability to embody larger-than-life characters who have become icons of comics and film.
“This really encompasses people’s ability to bring a character to life — a specific character that people already know inside and out,” she told Hero Complex. “The characterization, the acting, that’s what the audience is going to connect with ultimately when they watch the show, not just watch a bunch of people do circus tricks. They want to get pulled into the story.”
Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada focused on the show’s stunts, pyrotechnics and overall spectacle.
“The technology utilized in the show is not only going to blow your mind, it is going to take you to a whole new Marvel world like nothing fans have ever seen before,” Quesada said in a news release.
