It’s time for another installment of Paycheck Friday, the weekly roundup of some of Hero Complex’s favorite toys, games, books and other geek merchandise.
While a slate of summer movies including “Tomorrowland,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Pitch Perfect 2” battle it out in the box office over the weekend, this week’s paycheck goes to taking a trip to your local comic book shop to catch up on the month’s releases.
With May marking the launch of Marvel’s “Secret Wars” event series that sees the various Marvel universes combining into one unified Battleworld just as DC’s “Convergence” event is winding down, it’s easy to get lost in the various interconnected tie-in series from the “Big Two.”
Fear not, this week’s comic book selections are titles that require no knowledge of “Secret Wars” or “Convergence.”
This week’s first pick is “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl” No. 5 from writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson. This standalone issue is the perfect jumping-in point for new readers to become acquainted with Squirrel Girl.
Squirrel Girl, also known as college student Doreen Green when not busy fighting crime, debuted her very own theme song in the first issue of the series. A mutant with a squirrel tail possessing special squirrel strength and agility, Squirrel Girl’s most important asset is her ability to communicate with squirrels, including her companion Tippy-Toe.
This month’s issue features multiple Squirrel Girl adventures told by various individuals who claim to know the hero.
For those who would rather avoid picking up any superhero titles, consider “Exquisite Corpse,” the English-language debut by French writer and artist Pénélope Bagieu.
Originally published in French in 2010, “Exquisite Corpse” focuses on Zoe, a hard-working twentysomething with an unfulfilling job and boyfriend. She unexpectedly finds herself part of a Parisian literary scandal when she runs into a man she doesn’t realize is a world-famous author.
This week’s final pick is for those who didn’t get enough “Mad Max: Fury Road” last week.
“Fury Road” director and co-writer George Miller has collaborated with writers Nico Lathouris and Mark Sexton for “Mad Max: Fury Road: Nux & Immortan Joe” No. 1, the first issue of a four-part miniseries that chronicles the origin stories of Nux and Immortan Joe (those who want more Furiosa should look forward to next month’s release).
The issue is perfect for the “Mad Max” completist, as well as anybody who is interested in getting a peek into the post-apocalyptic world featured in “Mad Max” before fully committing to watching the movie.
Of course, this month saw the new Goddess of Thunder finally reveal her secret identity following a brawl that saw the Odinson and his allies pick up arms to support the new Thor, so our bonus pick for the week is “Thor” No. 8. If you’ve been waiting patiently to find out whom Mjolnir has deemed worthy, make sure to pick up the issue.
