Tommy Trojan has some new friends — Spider-Man, the Hulk, Wolverine and Captain America.

Marvel Entertainment has a new licensing deal in place with USC through Silver Star Merchandising, the Texas-based outfit launched last year by the family of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Here’s the blurb from Marvel:  “The collection combines one of the most recognizable athletic programs in the nation with some of the most popular Marvel Super Heroes of all-time including Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Wolverine. Featuring apparel and headwear for infants, kids, and adults, the collection will feature your favorite Super Heroes in USC’s school colors of Cardinal and Gold, along with its Trojan mascot and logos.”

Does this mean UCLA will have to settle for Archie and Jughead? For comic book fans who follow sports, there are plenty of other natural crossover possibilities. The Florida Gators and Swamp Thing seem like a match made in heaven and the Michigan Wolverines seem like a better fit for a certain clawed mutant.

No, Ace and Gary….the colors already match…

This is actually lame… Just what every comic fan loves, to have our heroes depicted wearing self-absorbed cheating jock uniforms! Can I soon read how Captain America believes he's owed a car or apartment for his heroism. REEKS! I don't see how a punished cheater gets this deal. I'll never buy Marvel again.

Awww… Sounds like angry SC fan! I guess you corrected me on a great many things. It must be SHAME that makes you so aggressive towards me. When I pointed out self-entitled football players that don’t play by the rules, you took it to HEART…tisk tisk. I guess cheating is only what happens when you get caught or admit cheating, Lonnie White. However, I stray from my point…I recall in comics, jocks are the bullies; just like in life. Marvel agreeing to a contract that displays their heroes wearing the uniforms of Sanctioned Cheaters just demonstrates a clear Lack of Institutional Control. Now John, I love your self-righteous attempt at insulting & correcting me! (Kudos to you!) That’s no way to show you’re better than the us poor meagar comic geeks that find it dissatisfying to see our heroes being used by your football program. Perhaps you take up a hobby other as you’re clearly just a fan (which means not an athlete of caliber to do so yourself). Again, I’m biased towards comics and you towards USC Football. I guess neither of us take reality all too serious, eh? Here I am straying again. Thank you again for a clear & concise education of intolerance towards others opinions. Man, class was in session & you showed me! I’ll go back to watching out for doors hitting me & apologizing for not being a fan of your school’s athletics.

    Peace & happiness,

    Dan
