16. “Wolverine” (1982) “I’m the best there is at what I do. But what I do isn’t very nice,” Logan narrates as this limited series by Chris Claremont and artist Frank Miller begins. If he wasn’t a breakout star already, this adventure in Japan (which inspired the 2013 film “The Wolverine”) sealed the deal. Since, in addition to seemingly countless team book appearances, Wolverine has starred in more than 300 issues of his solo comic series. Miller, who’d already made an impression on “Daredevil,” went on to write the classic Batman stories “The Dark Knight Returns” and “Year One” and create “Sin City” and “300,” both of which were adapted into films.
