Asteroids: It’s been a rocking week for space rubble

Nov. 10, 2011 | 5:25 p.m.

Asteroids, it seems, absolutely rock.

That was the message this week — whether it was the 1,300-foot-wide space rock that whizzed past Earth in real life, the chatter about a Hollywood adaptation of the “Asteroids” video game or the arrival of a new iPhone/iPad app (see the images above) that evokes the classic 1979  game that made intergalactic rubble so cool. (Although space rocks didn’t do so well on the silver screen that same year.)

Simple space shooters like Asteroids and later Galaga seem well-suited to the quick pace of today’s Angry Birds generation. That crowd may be elusive though for Universal Pictures and its pcoming adaptation attempt, now being scripted by Evan Spiliotopoulos, the writer of “Battle for Terra” and two upcoming high-profile films, “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Wanted 2.” An early plot line revolved around two estranged brothers who have to team up to save the planet from aliens, but that might be space dust at this point.
