Bungie, the creator of the bestselling “Halo” video game franchise, has released a trailer for its upcoming game “Destiny.”
The 60-second “Destiny” trailer, titled “Law of the Jungle,” was directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”) and features “Breaking Bad” actor Giancarlo Esposito.
“Pay attention, son,” Esposito says in his soft, commanding voice. “This is the part of the story that’s really important.”
Esposito, apparently reading to his child in a futuristic bedroom, goes on to read an excerpt from Rudyard Kipling’s 1895 sequel “The Second Jungle Book.”
“Now this is the Law of the Jungle — as old and as true as the sky. The Wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the Wolf that shall break it must die,” Esposito reads. “As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk the Law runneth forward and back — for the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.”
Meanwhile on screen, masked soldiers trade laser-fire with alien attackers while zipping through the “Destiny” sci-fi universe on space vehicles that resemble the speeder bikes in “Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi.”
The trailer blends live-action and CGI, aiming to give viewers a feel for the “Destiny” universe without actually revealing any gameplay footage — a move that Bungie and distributor Activision are saving for Sony’s E3 press conference on June 10.
The highly anticipated “Destiny” lets gamers play the role of a Guardian, tasked with protecting the last safe city on Earth. The first-person shooter reportedly features some massively multiplayer role-playing elements and online capabilities that will allow players to experience the aspects of the universe in real time — such as sunrises and sunsets.
The trailer was released online Thursday and will make its television debut Saturday on TNT during Game 3 of the NBA Western Conference Finals.
