Video game sales: ‘Dead Space 3’ knocks ‘Black Ops II’ off its perch
“Dead Space 3” was in first place for video game sales in February, knocking “Call of Duty: Black Ops II” into second. “Crysis 3” was in third.
Overall video game sales, however, reportedly sank 25% from February 2012.
Market research company NPD Group has released its U.S. sales data for the month. A bright spot in the report was that hardware sales increased over January, with boosts of 40% for Wii U and 30% for PlayStation Vita, Game Informer reports. Still, hardware sales were down 36% year over year.
And overall game sales continued to be a drag — even with the same number of new launches in NPD’s top 10 ranking as in February of last year. IGN quotes NPD analyst Liam Callahan as saying that “February 2013 new launches performed worse than last year with unit sales down 30%.”
The Los Angeles Times reported on the trend in January.
Sales of video game discs and consoles plummeted 22% last year, as consumers flocked to new digital devices and cut their spending, while publishers released fewer games.
The drop was much sharper than 2011’s 9% decline from 2010.
Amid the lousy news for the industry, “Call of Duty: Black Ops II” reigned as the bestselling game of 2012. Now, “Dead Space 3” has knocked it off its perch. Do you think “Dead Space” can keep the top spot?
