‘Lego Batman 2′: Calling in the Justice League and exploring Gotham

June 19, 2012 | 7:06 p.m.

“Lego Batman,” one of the most popular titles in the blocky game stable, builds on its roster  with the launch of “Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes” on Tuesday. The square Dark Knight and his sidekick Robin get new suits and gadgets, over 50 new allies and an even more sprawling Gotham City to protect.

The dynamic between Batman and Superman has always been the vigilante vs. the boy scout, and it plays out in this game as well.

“In classic buddy-movie style, there’s an unwilling cooperation,” says Jonathan Smith, head of production of TT Games. “Ultimately, they’re forced to work together.”

Not only did that duo work together, but the whole Justice League and many of their specific villains are thrown into this melee. In the trailer above, you can see Martian Manhunter and Cyborg among some of the other heroes. The Riddler, Brainiac, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, Sinestro and more villains will also make appearances alongside the two main masterminds, Lex Luthor and the Joker. And with the game’s ability to unlock characters, not only can you interact with The Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, but they will be playable.

“Within the array of the Justice League, there are so many iterations of the team to choose from. For us, we picked characters that were at the pinnacle of recognizability, and ones that gave us a lot of different powers to play with,” said Smith.

Along with more characters, developers also opened up the world of Gotham City to a degree not seen  in the previous game. So while you can immerse yourself in the game using practically any system (available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita), it may be just as fun to uncover the building blocks, so to speak, of the city. We’ll have more on the first day’s sales and the game’s new, and very vocal, departure from previous Lego titles.

A breath of fresh air as, contrary to recent dark on-screen incarnations, Lego Batman 2 is a non-stop fun ride for anyone looking for light-hearted amusement. The addition of Superman and the Justice League, together with highly-amusing quips from the characters, ensure it's filled chock-a-block with enjoyment. Some of the situations and action sequences definitely bring a laugh.
