A new trailer is out for “Lego Marvel Super Heroes,” offering a first look at the video game’s mega-villain — Galactus.
Of course, the cosmic devourer is unveiled in the last few seconds of the two-minute trailer, which was released Wednesday for Gamescom, the massive video game expo currently underway in Cologne, Germany.
The trailer begins with the gathering of Marvel’s villains, including Dr. Ock, Magneto and Loki, who seek the pieces of a shattered Silver Surfer surfboard.
“With these cosmic bricks, the world will be mine to rule,” Dr. Doom says in the video (watch it below). “I’ve hired every villain, bad guy and dark minion I can find to help assemble Dr. Doom’s Doomray of Doom.”
Players will take control of Marvel’s heroes, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America, Wolverine and more (the game boasts 100 playable characters) to chase down cosmic bricks, fight baddies and complete side-missions in their quest to save the Earth.
“There’s a threat to the Earth, and the story flows from there,” Arthur Parsons, game director at TT Games, told Hero Complex earlier this summer. “We sort of meet bad guys along the way, but you’re never really sure what the narrative is. We twist it and turn it to make sure the player always thinks they know what’s happening and then — boom — we turn it on its head.”
The game takes players through Lego Manhattan, the Stark Tower, Asteroid M, the X-Mansion and many more Marvel landmarks.
“We wanted to touch every corner of the Marvel universe that was possible,” Marvel Entertainment’s interactive manager, Chris Baker, told Hero Complex. “You can’t make an infinitely long game, but you can make a long game that has Asgard and that has New York. If you look at the big open world of New York, you’ll see the Baxter Building and Stark Tower.”
“Lego Marvel Super Heroes” employs the fun, lighthearted tone that made previous Lego-branded games — based on the worlds of “Star Wars,” “The Lord of the Rings,” “Harry Potter” and more — such hits, especially among younger players. The Gamescom trailer reveals some of this punny humor.
In one scene, the elastic Mr. Fantastic warns, “He can’t escape the long reach of justice.”
In another, Captain America threatens, “I’m going to spangle you til you see stars!”
“Lego Marvel Super Heroes” is due out this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, PC and next-gen consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
