Sonic the Hedgehog is headed to the big screen.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet announced Tuesday that the popular video game character will star in a hybrid computer-animated/live-action feature, produced by Neal H. Moritz through his Original Film banner and Marza’s Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi.

Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, alumni of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre who are also currently writing a live-action version of “The Jetsons,” will pen the script.

No director has been named.

Launched by SEGA (Marza’s parent company) in 1991, the Sonic franchise has sold more than 140 million games, with the irascible blue speedster also headlining multiple spinoffs, including several animated television series.

The character also had a cameo in 2012’s “Wreck-It-Ralph.”

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!! Why Sonic?! It's bad enough that Street Fighter, Dragon Ball, and Mario had to go through this pain, and now Sonic?!? They couldn't have gone with a game series that was already in the toilet like Duke Nukem, but no! Screw Sonic up for future generations to come!! This movie better be hella good, or else this will be the last live-action video game movie I will ever see (even though I should have learned my lesson after DB Evolution & Legend of Chun-Li).

Well I'm interested in seeing a a movie but we've already had more then enough with them in animation quality. What ever that possible to come up with by now couldn't even be as new or extreme as what has already been, I'm personally more interested in the comics now that all the games have been made. You know the whole switch into 3d for Sonic games was a tough deal to get used to using super speeds in 2d is freaken hard enough. My history with sonic games pretty much ends at the 2d level. But I'll still look out for this movie and see it like it or not it'll be fun.

They should do a serious sonic movie and I’d like that. I don’t want another smurfs or chipmunks type movie.

  4. Kelly Genualdi says:

Yes, I'm excited I can't wait, I hope it will be a back story, like how Sonic became a hero.
