‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ trailer: Jamie Foxx’s Electro shocks New York

Jamie Foxx’s Electro takes center stage  in a new international trailer for director Marc Webb’s superhero sequel, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

Electro greeted comic book readers in 1964 as an electrician named Max Dillon who gains the ability to generate and control electricity after he’s struck by lightning while repairing a power line. But in the upcoming film, Foxx’s Dillon is a meek Oscorp employee who becomes obsessed with Spider-Man after the hero saves his life — and he uses his high-voltage powers to wreak havoc on the streets of New York.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” star Andrew Garfield reprises his role as teenage hero Peter Parker, and the film’s cast also includes Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Paul Giamatti as the Rhino, Dane DeHaan (“Chronicle”) as rich boy Harry Osborn, son of Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn, who, fans will remember, is the head of Oscorp Industries and becomes the Green Goblin.

The clip begins with Spider-Man happily soaring through the blue skies of Manhattan, but soon, Electro’s sinister voice-over points out, “This city worships you. You wanted to be the hero, now you gotta pay the price.”

The action-heavy trailer then puts Spidey through his paces, battling Electro in Times Square and as part of a skybound sequence that sees the duo chasing one another through a labyrinth of New York office towers.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ isn’t set to open in the U.S. until May 2, but Sony has great expectations for the superhero franchise. The studio has already announced that the third and fourth installments in the saga are set for release on June 10, 2016, and May 4, 2018.

Additionally, the company announced plans for new movies about Spider-Man’s nemesis Venom and the collective of bad guys known as the Sinister Six via its Electro Arrives website. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Ed Solomon are to write the screenplay for “Venom,” while Drew Goddard is set to write, and potentially direct, “The Sinister Six.”
