“Behind the Candelabra” actor Michael Douglas will star in “Ant-Man,” Edgar Wright’s 2015 comic book adventure for Marvel.

Douglas is set to play original Avengers member Hank Pym, Marvel announced on its website Monday. In the comics, Dr. Pym is a scientist who invents a shrinking serum that allows him to sneak around in miniature form and surprise foes.

Ant-Man & The Wasp #1 (of 3)“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves,” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said in the announcement. “We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”

Douglas joins previously announced star Paul Rudd, who is set to play Scott Lang. In the comics, Lang is a reformed thief and the second superhero to take the name Ant-Man.

“Ant-Man” is slated for a July 31, 2015 theatrical release. It’s unclear whether either incarnation of the diminutive hero will appear in writer-director Joss Whedon’s upcoming “Avengers” sequel, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which also is set for release in 2015. In the comics, Pym is the creator of Ultron, an automaton that becomes a supervillain.

Wright embarks on “Ant-Man” after the success of this summer’s “The World’s End,” his third collaboration with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The trio’s Cornetto Trilogy — “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and “World’s End” — established Wright as an especially beloved figure among the  fan community, his films fusing humor and heart within genre trappings.

Wright’s been attached to the project for some time — he  debuted “Ant-Man” test footage that showcased the helmeted hero growing and shrinking in size at Comic-Con in 2012.

So starts the fall the Marvel Movie Empire. This role needs someone fresh and new. Not the usual suspects. I am deeply annoyed.

  2. jimmy woo says:

Grampa Ant-Man. Does he need a walker to mount his trusty ant-steed?

  3. KS Ng says:

It's obvious that Michael Douglas is starring as an older Hank Pym who invented the suit and Pym particles, which will get stolen by Paul Rudd's Scott Lang.

There is nothing wrong, people need to stop complaining about things they have no idea at all.

  4. @Lethonee says:

Bloody Hell! He's just turned 69!

  5. jock says:

As an image of the respective comic book could you post a pic from either of the two Ant-Men who will be featured in the movie (Hank Pym, Scott Lang), as opposed to the pictured third Ant-Man (Eric O'Grady) who is not in the film and used a very different costume in the featured cover.

  6. Kenton says:

With the Paul Rudd – Scott Lang back up, I'm okay with this pick. Hopefully, having both of the Ant-Men in the film, there will be a plot point where it is Rudd that becomes Ant-Man and not Douglas. A Pym that is older than Stark (and everyone else for that matter) could be a bad thing. Since it's Michael Douglas, I'm not too worried.

  7. Ron says:

I dont wanna sound ignorant but idk how i feel about this choice. It takes the origin story away from the original and my mind already wrapped around rudd being hank. If hank is old and retired then that means there will be no wasp or janet in avengers. Its a damn shame. Idk where theyre going. Whatever goes up always comes down, i hope this isnt the start of the fall for marvel cinematc universe

  8. upset Marvel Fan says:

This is about as good a casting choice as DC casting Afleck as Batman. A ridiculously old Hank Pym does not fall in line with the Marvel comics story line. I am SOOOO disappointed.
