A new trailer for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is out, teasing a grim battle in which Marvel’s mightiest superheroes have to protect a world that, apparently, might not want them.

“We have no place in the world,” Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) says in the trailer, which debuted during the broadcast of the College Football Playoff championship game Monday night.

“Age of Ultron” reunites the Marvel superheroes, including Widow, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in a battle against Ultron (James Spader).

“Everyone creates the thing they dread,” intones the villainous automaton, one of Tony Stark’s inventions gone awry.

But if the new trailer is any indication, the Avengers’ biggest faceoffs might be against each other. The new trailer reveals more than a little conflict between Marvel’s disparate heroes, with Thor grabbing Iron Man by the throat, as well as Iron Man donning his Hulkbuster armor in a battle against the Hulk.

“No matter who wins or loses, trouble always comes around,” Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury says.

The trailer also features newcomers including Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, as well as Andy Serkis as an as-yet-unnamed character.

“Age of Ultron” is director Joss Whedon’s hotly anticipated follow-up to 2012’s “The Avengers,” which united Marvel’s disparate superheroes against Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and his swarm of alien invaders. The summer release set box-office records, grossing more than $1.5 billion worldwide, and was hailed as witty and worthy of its hype.

“Age of Ultron” is due in theaters May 1.
