A new clip from “The Avengers” shines a spotlight on Scarlett Johansson – as well as writer-director Joss Whedon’s trademark wit.
The 43-second clip, released one month before the film hits theaters on May 4, represents the first “Avengers” footage revealed by Marvel since the trailer. The film assembles a dream team of mighty heroes, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).
The new scene shows Johansson as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. the Black Widow, helplessly tied to a chair, surrounded by a military man and two goons. Well, maybe “helplessly” isn’t quite the right word.
“I’m in the middle of an interrogation,” she says, with a trace of exasperation, into a phone propped on her shoulder. “This moron is giving me everything.”
On the other end of the phone is her colleague, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), who makes it clear that this can’t wait — Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) has been compromised. What follows is a bone-cracking, wood-chipping, back-flipping action sequence in which Johansson takes out the baddies, while still tied to that chair. It’s a combination of sass, chilled confidence and martial-arts prowess that would make Buffy proud.

It'll take Joss to get me to like Scarlett. He might just succeed.
Gotta love Scarlett!
It seems that a lot of the focus in the publicity for this movie has been around Thor, Iron Man, Cap, etc – It's refreshing to see an article about the Black Widow.
The movie is so close now I can almost feel it Our local comic shop here in Canberra, Australia is hiring a cinema for its customers for the first screening.

I’ve written a solid collection of Marvel (espec Thor) fan fiction, why not check it out? http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1276881/David_Scholes
How re they going to bring Captin America out of 1935 and into 2014 with Iron man, how's that work? I never liked the Avengers for that reason. The Hulk needs to smak down on Ben Grim or Thor
Did you see Captain America film (or ever read the comics), it's pretty clearly explained in both.
Have you seen the Captain America movie? It has the answer to your question at the end.
Did you watch the Captain America movie? Specifically the end? (Or the very beginning, for that matter).
Marvel clearly hasn't forgotten that a large part of the audience for films like "The Hunger Games" is young women, some of whom can care less about the rest of the Avengers.
Good move.
I agree. Though I haven't followed Marvel as closely as the males have, I find it appealing, despite being a part of the "young women" you speak of.
Looking forward to this AND The Amazing Spider-Man.
Why are you people calling her scarlett? Her name is black widow or natasha. Scarlett is from gi-joe.Caps head looks wierd in that picture. He just looks wrong and out of place.
people call her scarlett…well, maybe because her real name is scarlett johansson?
