Zack Snyder, the director of the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel that will bring together Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, released a new photo of actor Ben Affleck in Batman’s cape and cowl on Thursday, the opening day of Comic-Con International 2014.

The close-up shot arrives one day after July 23, which had been officially declared Batman Day to honor the hero’s 75th anniversary.

Set for release on May 6, 2016, “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” will see Henry Cavill reprise his “Man of Steel” role as Superman, with Affleck taking over as Batman and Israeli actress Gal Gadot portraying Wonder Woman. Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Lex Luthor in the film, which will lead in to a planned “Justice League” movie that Snyder also will direct.

Warner Bros. has not yet confirmed which characters will appear in the “Justice League” film.

Many fans have pointed out that the suit Affleck will wear in the film seems influenced by Frank Miller’s take on the Dark Knight from the legendary graphic novels “The Dark Knight Returns” and “The Dark Knight Strikes Again” — which is fitting, as Snyder has said that Miller’s take on Batman will inform the movie.

Looks great! People should give Affleck a chance before writing him off! So far the suit looks good and he appears to wear it as well as Christian Bale.

    na na nana

  3. JoeWeil says:

Ben Affleck as Batman? What's the matter, couldn't they find an actor?

    • John says:

Feel better about yourself now that you've jumped on the year-old anti-Affleck bandwagon? Good for you, junior.

  4. @JoeKoffee says:

Looks good. Really good Bat-profile. I'm sure he'll be terrific.

  5. Markus says:

I absolutely hate bat-flecks costume it’s supposed to be top of the line military grade prototype with large pointed ears. Not just a leathery looking suit with pointed flaps for ears that come up 2in. And what’s with that fat bat on the suit, is he supposed to be old and fat now.

    • John says:

What a ridiculous comment. "… supposed to be top of the line military grade… large pointed ears."

I may no longer be in the military, but when were large pointed ears ever a tactical necessity in any fight? And it's a made up fantasy comic book character with practically zero possibility of this ever being real, so why takes these details so frickin' seriously? Why not just lighten up and enjoy the flick when it's released?

  6. Andy says:

@Markus – Go read the graphic novels by Frank Miller for Batman–any of them–and then you'll actually have an informed opinion on why the suit has been done like this. If you still hate it at that point, that's your call, but Frank Miller writes the heart and soul of the Dark Knight, and his vision for the character inspired the Arkham series of games as well as the best stories that have come in the decades since. I love the direction Zack has chosen for the franchise, and I can't wait to see the new show. Plus, Wonder Woman looks amazing, and Affleck's jawline seems carved like the rock of ages in that pic. Well done guys!
