Word that Ben Affleck will play Batman in the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel disappointed Dark Knight fans, who took to Twitter and Facebook to voice their displeasure — and to poke some fun at the former “Daredevil” actor.

Friday morning, #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck was trending on Twitter, with users offering suggestions as to who would make a better Batman. A few examples:

Some comedians and actors also piled on the snark:

On Facebook, users bombarded Warner’s announcement with negative comments. “Bummer. Oh well,” user George Thomas wrote. “Nooooo!!! Why does DC comics hate us?? They had such an amazing cast for Man Of Steel…now this?? Ben!?? Fail,” wrote user Johnny Esposito.

A petition posted on Change.org calling for the removal of Affleck from the film reached 10,000 signatures by midday Friday. The description reads, “His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won’t do the role justice. He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman. His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he’s not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else.”

Not all reactions have been so extreme. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof tried to put things into perspective:

Comic book artist and writer Tim Seeley reprimanded overzealous fans:

And Travis Langley, a psychology professor and the author of “Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight,” wrote:

At the time of writing, Ben Affleck’s own Twitter account was silent on the news. His most recent tweet was Aug. 5, welcoming U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power to Twitter.

Some of Ben's acting isn't so bad, but I'll have to agree with the notion that he's just not intimidating enough to be the Dark Knight. Not even Keaton was intimidating although his Bruce Wayne was excellent. The only actor (so far) to get the appropriate level of intimidation was Bale. The Batman as written in "The Dark Knight Returns" or "The Killing Joke" should leave you with the impression, "I really don't want to fight this guy. Even if I win, which isn't a given, I'm going to hospital."

    • hernson says:

Once again the Batman / Superman movie franchises have been flushed down the toilet. The end is definitely near.

  2. Johnz522 says:

Another comic book movie and the dumbing down continues. There was a time when Hollywood made films for adults. It was called the "Golden Era" for a reason.

  3. rudy desi says:

you know what, bale was a great batman. Unfortuntely he doesnt want the gig no more…so what do we have? ok gosling? brolin? or some unknown yahoo from a mtv show? yeah right….or a actor whos an oscar winner? You all are haters of affleck..he is on a role and has more good than bad movies but for some reason everyone is fixated on gigli or daredevil…grow up!!!

    • Martin says:

The default argument of the intellectually impaired: Grow up.

    • STANS BRAIN says:

really do you remember the poor daredevil I bet STAN LEE would differ with you or would you like to pay MR LEE the money he lost with using BENNY and the great JOB he did on the DAREDEVIL (YOU GROWN UP)

  4. Bio says:

Danny Devito would be better then Affleck

  5. Javier says:

I believe Affleck has it in him. He was good in The Town. Six months of training and he will be fine.

  6. BUGZ dcmarvelfan says:

AFfleck is NOT batman material. They should put him in as Alfred the butler. I guess I'll wait for the DVD. Thanks DC and Warner for ruining this for us.

  7. person says:

Anne Hathaway was terrible as catwoman, in fact I always believed cat woman just dosnt belong in the movies.

  9. Keelyd says:

Jensen Ackles would have been the best choice for Batman. He has the voice the jaw and understands how to play the dark side and very capable of being Bruce Wayne. He did the voice of Jason in Batman under the Red Hood. He may not be an A lister to those in Hollywood but he has a very diverse following which is what movies today need. Batman has always been something kids grew up following along with the comic books, so why do we want Batman to be some old guy. A young Superman fighting an old Batman really. And since when is Batman taller then Superman. It's time we get some new faces on the big screen.

I feel sad for all the naysayers. It's obvious that most of the negative comments I've been reading around the internet are coming from people who take a great deal of glee in spouting witty oneliners that put other people down which is more reflective of the comment writers state of mind than Affleck's abilities. I remember when "The Sonny And Cher Show" came to an end and when people heard that Cher was moving on to movies the naysayers came out of the woodwork. I was so overjoyed to see Cher walk up to the Academy stage to accept her Oscar. I look forward to Ben Affleck's Batman and wish him all the greatest success in the world.

  11. Sabrina says:

I cant wait for Affleck to be Batman! Hes an incredible, hot, fit actor and I hope Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Robin! #hugebatmanfan

  12. John Doughboy says:

Maybe Jay Leno would be a better Batman/ Batman's Father. Ben Aflac could be a bat man or bat boy in the game of baseball and perhaps do well.

  13. BATBOB says:

I feel that the daredevil is a marvel hero which Ben played poorly and batman is a DC hero, no one actor should play two superheros in one lifetime. He is already known as playing daredevil, why would anyone expect him to play the most popular superhero without screwing it up is beyond me! I mean really come on Ben don't destroy this let someone not so will known have a shot because if you do screw this up YOU WILL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN PERIOD do you really want to do this think about it. THINK ABOUT IT (I MEAN IT BENNY I'M :-| SPAZZING HERE)

    • Beatlesfan says:

You do know that Chris Evans who plays Captain America, also played Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four films right? So he's played two superheroes in his lifetime.

GIVE BEN A CHANCE WITH ALL YOUR DOUBTS AND CONCERNS HE MIGHT JUST PROVE YOU ALL WRONG

  15. Guest101Brain says:

Michael Jackson wrote a song called 'Ben'. It was about a rat/mouse. Mouse to play Batman?

The PEOPLE have SPOKEN! 50,000+ signed Change Petition in 1 day!!!

  17. Birgit Kangelaris says:

I believe that Ben Affleck is a great selection for the new Batman. He is believable as a handsome billionaire, so the Bruce Wayne part is covered. For the Dark Knight side of things, I think he should start training with his wife "ELEKTRA". Incidently, I think she would have make a good Cat Woman.

  18. maria says:

Ben Afflect is a good actor, and yes he had made some bad movies but many celebrities has. I will give him the chance to be the next Batman.

  19. Philip Tinsley III says:

Hopefully Ben Affleck knows the history of "Batman", i.e. DETECTIVE COMICS No. 45, 1938, and King Manuel II of Portugal … . As for the current or second (2nd) Batman, Tom Berrenger might be a better choice, no disrespect intended to Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, or Christian Bale.

  20. matt says:

Please no Afleck. Christian Bale made the Dark Knight Great again. Dont ruin it again Warner Bros!!! Please get Bale back!!!!!

  21. JoeyTuttTutt says:

The director makes or breaks a film. Zack Snyder better direct his proverbial behind off, or he will face the wrath of all these BAT-Fans. Afleck as Daredevil sucked (not just him, but the entire film was GARBAGE). He may step up his acting abilities for this film. I'm just shocked that Warner Bros/DC cast him instead of some other actors. Even and unknown would have sufficed (and come with no preconceived feelings) about playing the role. Ben's name may as well be AFLAC, because he's considered the lame-duck for the role. He may surprise everyone, though. We shall see.

  22. Guest says:

    Better get Bale back WB….

  23. alley cat says:

    He's too old.
