Word that Ben Affleck will play Batman in the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel disappointed Dark Knight fans, who took to Twitter and Facebook to voice their displeasure — and to poke some fun at the former “Daredevil” actor.
Friday morning, #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck was trending on Twitter, with users offering suggestions as to who would make a better Batman. A few examples:
Some comedians and actors also piled on the snark:
On Facebook, users bombarded Warner’s announcement with negative comments. “Bummer. Oh well,” user George Thomas wrote. “Nooooo!!! Why does DC comics hate us?? They had such an amazing cast for Man Of Steel…now this?? Ben!?? Fail,” wrote user Johnny Esposito.
A petition posted on Change.org calling for the removal of Affleck from the film reached 10,000 signatures by midday Friday. Not all reactions have been so extreme. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof tried to put things into perspective:
Comic book artist and writer Tim Seeley reprimanded overzealous fans:
And Travis Langley, a psychology professor and the author of “Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight,” wrote:
At the time of writing, Ben Affleck’s own Twitter account was silent on the news. His most recent tweet was Aug. 5, welcoming U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power to Twitter.
