Benedict Cumberbatch will star in “Doctor Strange.”

The actor behind genre greats Khan, Smaug and Sherlock has been confirmed for the role, according to a statement issued by Marvel Thursday.

Due in theaters Nov. 4, 2016, the upcoming Marvel project is part of the studio’s phase three roster of comic-book blockbusters and will be directed by Scott Derrickson (“Deliver Us From Evil,” “Sinister”) from a script by Jon Spaihts.

The film will bring to the screen Stephen Vincent Strange, the former neurosurgeon turned Sorcerer Supreme who is the Marvel Universe’s greatest protector against magical peril – and one of his fellow superheroes’ most sought-after advisors.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” producer Kevin Feige said in a statement. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

First appearing in a Stan Lee-written and Steve Ditko-drawn story in “Strange Tales” No. 110 in 1963, the brilliant magician has fought such foes as the dread Dormammu of the Dark Dimension and the dream-powered Nightmare, all while sporting a red cape with a spectacularly high collar.

He has also been seen as a member of groups including the Defenders, New Avengers and Illuminati.

Marvel has teased a possible Doctor Strange project in its recent films “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Thor: The Dark World.” In the former, an espionage agent being interrogated by Cap, Black Widow and Falcon mentions Stephen Strange in a list of potential threats to and targets of the evil terrorist organization Hydra. And in the “Thor” sequel, Dr. Selvig’s chalkboard references the Crossroads, an interdimensional nexus that features heavily in Doctor Strange stories in the comics.

Cumberbatch’s casting comes after rumors that Joaquin Phoenix was being considered for the part. The English actor is no stranger to genre roles, with credits including “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Hobbit” films and BBC’s hit series “Sherlock.”

Benedict is perfect for the role of Dr. Strange!

  3. Chris says:

That's the best casting from Marvel since Downey as Tony Stark. Cumberbatch may be a little overexposed but he has the gravitas and mystery to master the master of mystic arts….

  4. donna franzen says:

I can't think of no other actor at present that can play the role to perfection.

  5. Toni Roberts says:

I loved DOCTOR STRANGE growing up, and I love Benedict Cumberbatch as a grown up — put the two together and you make massive piles of fresh popcorn and one happy, happy fan!

What great news for Benedict's fans. His acting is superlative, winning him an EMMY this year for his Sherlock role, the Olivier award four years earlier for his theater work in FRANKENSTEIN, and lately the Hollywood International Festival Award for Best Actor for the Imitation GAME. HE IS SO IN DEMAND that the 100,000 tickets for his future play HAMLET in LONDON sold out in a matter of 7 hours .
He is so beloved in China that his last SHERLOCK TV show was viewed by 30Million Chinese. Wait till they see Benedict as Dr Strange – it will be earth-shaking .

overexposed actor and a boring choice. Could they not come up with someone lesser known.

    • Skylar Alexis says:

Perhaps he is very well known, but he is so with good cause. One cannot say that he is boring. To date, he has not yet turned in a bad performance. He is a brilliant actor, and he will surely play this part to perfection. This role is in safe hands.

  8. Casey Bahr says:

The "leadership" Benedict puts into his characters is so marvelous that he is going to raise the bar for this franchise that other franchises are going to find difficult to equal. This is a brilliant move by all of the participants and the audiences are going to be massive!

Best casting ever. Cumberbatch will bring to the part nuances that aren't in the script and more than the director asks.
