Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance a Wonder Woman tryout?

Feb. 04, 2013 | 1:56 p.m.

Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance has been linked to the super-secret Illuminati sect, and some wondered whether it was linked to the Super Bowl blackout. The rest of us?

We had visions of Wonder Woman dancing in our heads.

But here’s a question: Why is it that seemingly every comic book character has had a shot at the big screen of late except she of the golden lasso? (OK, we’re exaggerating. But only slightly.)

Isn’t it time for a Wonder Woman movie already?

As Beyoncé told Hero Complex as far back as 2008, she was gunning for the movie role of Wonder Woman.

“I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? It would be great. And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It’s time for that, right?”

Whether you like the idea of Beyoncé as Wonder Woman or hate it, you have to admit Beyoncé cuts a fierce figure that reminds us of that fiercest of superwomen.

Don’t believe us? Check out the above photo gallery, matching up some of our favorite Wonder Woman images with shots of Beyoncé in action at the Super Bowl. Yes, Lynda Carter is represented.

And for a big screen adaptation of Wonder Woman, here’s Joss Whedon talking to about, among other things, how he’d hoped to tackle Wonder Woman as an Angelina Jolie-esque character.  Director Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”) also has an angle, as he talked about to

What do you think? Were you thinking “Wonder Woman” during the half-time show? Or were you looking for cold beer?

And for the conspiracy theorists among us: That diamond hand signal that Beyoncé threw up during the half-time show was probably just an inside nod to hubby Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella records. The Yahoo Sports story links to a Complex Music gallery showing plenty of celebrities doing the same. Unless, of course, they’re all members of the …

  1. No one remembers Foxy Cleopatra? not the best actress, but a whole lot of woman!!

  2. Ken says:

Awesome halftime show, awesome performer. Very sexy outfit. Loved it

  3. Zek says:

You have to be joking. NO WAY.

  4. Dave says:

Wonder Woman is trying out to be Beyonce.

  5. Warner Bros have already greenlit a Justice League movie for 2015 featuring Wonder Woman (plus Superman, Batman etc) The studio have not revealed who’s in contention for leading roles (exept Henry Cavill already cast as Superman). Wonder Woman is probably the hardest member to cast. Beyonce definitely has the charisma and built in audience to be successful in the role…

  6. Brolio says:

In other news, Lucy Liu plays Rosa Parks in an upcoming civil rights film.

  7. plr says:

the reason that there hasnt been another WW is because theres no one to fill WW/ linda carters shoes!!!

  8. josh says:

Wonder Woman is a amazon casting Beyonce would be a huge failure its not who the Wonder Woman is. You need a very tall woman who looks like Wonder Woman.

    • joe says:

These people don't care about any of that. They just want to put the biggest name on screen to fill the most seats.

      • John W. says:

Of course they care about that. David E. Kelly's Wonder Woman pilot starred Adrianne Palicki who is 5'10" — an inch taller than Linda Carter.

There just isn't any place for misguided and uninformed frustration like yours.

    • Carol says:

Beyonce is not audition for Wonder Woman, she is performing at a football game.

    • Anthony says:

So you're saying they should cast RuPaul. I mean, if Wonder Woman has to be tall, and believable as a woman. :-)

  9. joelharding1234 says:

Sorry, the Superbowl was all about football.

  10. mark says:

Beyonce’s performance was still 10x better than madonna’s.

  11. toddo says:

beyonce is great. she has made a career highlighting female beauty and strength. i'm sure another actress can put on the costume and prance around over sexing it up. but name me another modern female star that could authentically embody the spirit of Wonder Woman, not counting Angelina.
beyonce would make lynda carter proud!

    • Steven says:

WW doesn't have 2b almighty famous. Gemma Arterton, Jessica Biel, Jessica Chastain, Jena Malone, Naomi Watts, and, CARRIE-ANN MOSS WOULD BE PERFECT but maybe she's a bit older? Anywho, with Beyonce the movie WILL flop.

    • GetRealAlready says:

Beyonce would make: Lynda Carter cry, the studio pissed, the world laugh our *sses off/but want our ticket money refunded, and herself humiliated.

  12. Carol says:

I do not see the comparison with Wonder Woman and Beyonce or her outfit she was wearing. Wonder Woman does not wear black, she wears a red, white and blue bathingsuit. She has silver to gold bracelets.

  13. Carol says:

Beyonce is not auditioning for Wonder Woman… She is at a football game, a Superbowl. Wonder Woman wears a red, white, blue bathingsuit, her bracelets are silver or gold. Beyonce is wearing black. Her hair is not black and eyes are not blue.

  14. bilbo says:

Nope Wonder Woman is not a DIVA. But maybe she could be an amazon named DIVA. We have to stick with the fact that Wonder Woman is a Greek myth.

    • Grace says:

Bilbo, Wonder Woman is NOT a made-up character from the '40s by a man who wanted to fill the void of a positive strong heroic woman in comics. Watch the documentary, "Wonder Women: The Untold Story of American Superheroines." Hey, it's only an hour of your time, funny, smart, and LOTS of information packed in there!

  15. Daniel says:

you guys are all dumb, she really is illumaniti. Obamas black soldiers/ Jay Z Kanye Lil Wayne Rhianna Beyonce & More. Washington sleeps with Hollywood & the entertainment business! #Rituals #Business #Money

  17. beyonceblue says:

    hahahahaha you're joking :D

  18. gerard says:

OMG! That would be soooo cool to see! Beyoncé as WW!!! After all the power she showed at the super bowl I have no trouble at all imagining that, it really doesn't matter that she is a black woman, that gives even more force and strength to the character. Loved the post! PS: Remember there are a LOT of men who are eager to see a strong female, a female LEADER, at the silver screen! Stop thinking that the audience is the same as in 1950!!!!

    • Steven says:

I love the childish, irresponsible and robotic responses. "as in the 1950's"? WW IS GREEK MYTH, NOT AN AFRO-AFRICAN Myth "!!!"! Stick to Reality, and things should go right. When NBC had a "Grease" Broadway Musical casting program, it was very feeble having blacks trying out for the leads, Danny and Sandy, since THAT high school WAS AN ALL WHITE HIGH AND CULTURALLY SO, BEING IN THE 1950'S. People who are so bent on changing the world of The white/Caucasian but not their own are so shallow and irresponsible, serving some bitter, personal agenda.

  19. Kevin says:

No Way. beyonce is NOT WW. But she would make a good Cheetah.

  20. Miles dorfman says:

Agreed Wonder Woman is not black in the comics. But to say that beyonce could not play her is a question. We stareo Wonder Woman in our culture as being white yes, but Wonder Woman represents all woman. In our multy race society that has changed since she was created way back when .times have changed. Who would think that we would ever have a black president than why not a black Wonder Woman . Beyonce more than anyone would be a great Wonder Woman .not because of her color, but the person she is

  21. Stanford says:

Beyoncé as wonder woman Angelina Jolie

  22. TalkingAgain says:

Errmmm. The problem is that, not just the character, but the entire story of Wonder Woman is ground in a VERY Grecian background.

For instance, if someone said to me, 'What would you think of a Black Batman?', I would say, 'Great!'. Batman's history is the sort of thing that could happen to anyone. His story is not inherently specific to any ethnic or racial group. Same with Spiderman, Captain America or countless other heros and heroines.

Wonder Woman, however, deals VERY heavily in Greek mythology. It would be like someone saying, 'Don't you think it's time for a White Black Panther (T'Challa) movie, or a Chinese Black Widow movie?'. Given the very specific ethnic backgrounds of those characters, it doesn't really add up to change it.

Actually, I'd go even further. To me, the IDEAL Wonder Woman would not only have very Grecian characteristics (the dark hair and eyes, medium/olive toned skin, the wavy, or even crimped hair texture, similar to how John Byrne or Alex Ross drew her… ), but also the sort of heavy musculature that would point to her upbringing on the Amazon island of Themyscria, which was pretty much a pure warrior's commune.

Seriously. The woman is practically a Klingon as far as battle culture is concerned…heh, you know they're gonna choose someone thinner than a pair of scissors, though, lol. And she'll probably look like she's freakin' twelve years old. Somethin' wrong with Hollywood these days, man.

    • Steven says:

A Writers creation/vision MUST be respected as it took time to invent, draw and create, and it's THE WRITERS creation which must appear on the screen. Batman and all of them Were and Are of a Caucasian background, and so are Aragorn and Gandalf, Skywalker and Leah, Beowulf, Atreides and Reverend Mother, and on and on. BOOKS AND IT'S CHARACTERS MUST REMAIN AS THE CREATORS CREATED THEM. Imagine: "Blue Demon" or "Santos" being of an Asian descent, or Cabin In The Sky be a Caucasian or Mexican cast. NOT Going to happen.

    • tbplayer59 says:

Darken the hair and pop in some blue contact lenses, and you've got Diana. You're right about the olive toned skin, and that's what Beyonce's got. I love this idea.

      • MeMyselfAndIForReal says:

Beyonce? Seriously?!? But the girl can't TALK!!!!! She can't ACT!!!!! She can't even tell the truth about NOT GIVING BIRTH!!!!! And tried to put one over on the whole galaxy by lip-syncing at a Presidential Inauguration while acting like: "Look at me, I'm so good, I don't even need this ear piece they made me wear, ya'll"!!!!! Beyonce lacks the talent, elocution, integrity, and/or class to play W2.

    • ViewtifulBass says:

In the case of Captain America, his story IS specific to a Caucasian ethnicity. He came from America in WWII, they were as diverse back then as they were now, it would make no sense to make him say black for instance when blacks were segregated from whites or be Japanese in WWII America.

    • Claus Talon says:

"Actually, I'd go even further. To me, the IDEAL Wonder Woman would not only have very Grecian characteristics (the dark hair and eyes, medium/olive toned skin, the wavy, or even crimped hair texture, similar to how John Byrne or Alex Ross drew her" I'm TOTAL AGREEMENT with you in your complete post, and this part says IT ALL.

    • Claus Talon says:

-I must correct myself. I'd posted that I was agreement with your entire post in error.
"For instance, if someone said to me, 'What would you think of a Black Batman?', I would say, 'Great!'. Batman's history is the sort of thing that could happen to anyone. His story is not inherently specific to any ethnic or racial group. Same with Spiderman, Captain America or countless other heros and heroines." THIS i can't go along with. I prefer things as true to their origins as they can get. Don't get me wrong, I am of African-American,Hipsanic and Caucasian origin-but I wouldn't even have selected Samuel L. Jackson for Nick Fury, while Michael Biehn or Adrian Pasdar were available. I want the characters as close to their 2-D depiction as possible. That is what I love about proper casting. Bringing th e 2D image to 2D.

  23. Miles dorfman says:

What about Nubia. She was on paradise island. I believe she was black. I don’t buy your comics they the writer or creators can make anyone in that character . They just don’t want to change . A white Wonder Woman is because she is stereotyped . One like batman and superman, Wonder Woman is perfect to change. And beyonce is the one. Wonder Woman has a star on her tiara. Beyonce is a star

    • Steven says:

You confuse WHAT IS vs. 'what I want it to be.' Obama/politics–LOL, has (should have) NOTHING to do with movie-making. "was created way back when"? Let's just go all out and change EVERY BOOK character in History for the sake of some self centered agenda? Huck Finn, Golden A$$, Valjean, Don Quixote, Prometheus Bound, Zeus, Achilles, AND LIST GOES FOR EVERMORE! I know:let's change Cabin In The Sky's leads to a Mexican and a Brit, and The Color Purple's to an East Asian and an Arabic. Whites ARE NOT TO BLAME FOR AMAZING LITERATURE AND MUST NOT BE CHANGED JUST TO FILL SOME PEOPLE'S DELIRIOUS SELF CENTERED FASCINATIONS.

      • YeahISaidIt says:

I don't think it's even as technical as all that. Miles is just a stan. Or, an employee. Why should a studio waste hundreds of millions of dollars on a non-acting over-rated coochie-popping screecher that wouldn't be W2 material even if she fell asleep, dreamt, and woke up inside the comic book wearing the outfit?

  24. arona says:

do u guys even kno about pam grier , cleopatra jones, etc that's where the idea of woman came in so beyonce should consider portraying some of pam grier's ,tamara dobson's old flicks….

  25. marianella says:

    and Megan Fox?

  26. Sunshine6711 says:

It seems to me anytime you bring up a black woman for anything, there is a lot of negative talk either about her looks, her family, her body, her fashion style, etc… It seems black women are only limited to the likes of Halle Berry and even then to me it seems because she is black she is called a slut for having numerous boyfriends like many female celebrities. The only difference is her relationships seem to be the more committed type and more public. White America needs to wake up and accept black beauty as it is. Stop trying to make us white or make us feel if we do not look like white women our chances of success in certain industries of the world are doomed. We African Americans are well aware that whatever superhero movie we want to be in will more than likely be compared to white women who originally fulfilled the role. As far as looks goes I believe Beyonce would be a fascinating wonder woman. As far as her acting, I'm not so sure.

  27. Scorpio says:

Rosa Parks was not fiction you idiot. It’s a fictional character based on a fictional movie.

  28. GreenMajin says:

She would be an insult to wonder woman. If this happens I don't know that I could watch it. I've been waiting far to long for a good wonder woman movie for them to ruin it with someone who would be such a poor fit for the character.

  29. Stuart says:

At one time, Lucy Lawless would have been great in the role.

    • plr says:

absolutely agree lucy lawless would be a great one.and to those making it a black thang I disagee. why even take it there? as if you would not be offended by a white or puerto rican protraying pamela grier?! ah.

  30. mrbonham says:

When you say that the diamond hand symbol is just a nod to roc-a-fella records .. its the same thing as being a nod to the illuminati. The actual Rockefeller family is a very wealthy family involved in the illuminti. Do a little research. I think the name of his record label being a take on the wealthy Rockefeller family name isn’t mere coincidence.

  31. Claus Talon says:

Beyonce as Wonder Woman-Hmmm…Let me think about it-_ _ _ _ NO! She's one heck of a looker, but NO. Diana Prince is a GREEK Amazonian archtype-and should ALWAYS be portrayed as such. Now, mind you all, the demographics on the Isle of Amazons has evolved over time, so they've represented females of other ethnic origins in more updated lore. That being the case i could accept her having a role as one of those still living on the Island-BUT Diana has to be as she was originally portrayed. The problem is where can be found a female actress that fits the image standard as illustrated by Alex Ross? When you find her let me know!

  32. T says:

Amazon warriors are a Belizean descent so Beyonce to play as Wonder Woman would be a great idea she has a complex that’s very similar to the DC comic version All she need to do is die her hair black
