‘Captain America 3’ to open May 6, 2016, opposite ‘Man of Steel’ sequel

April 07, 2014 | 10:14 a.m.

Mark your calendars.

The release date showdown between Captain America and Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman is now official — Marvel has confirmed that its follow-up to the box office smash “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will open May 6, 2016, the same date staked out by Warner Bros. for its “Man of Steel” sequel.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” soared to a domestic box office record of $96.2 million in its opening this weekend, making it the best-ever April debut of a movie. The latest in an unbroken chain of big screen successes for comic book movie powerhouse Marvel, the sequel, generated just more than $207 million in its first 10 days overseas.

The follow-up to 2013’s “Man of Steel,” which will pair Henry Cavill’s Superman with Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, is also set to open in theaters May 6, 2016 — a weekend that now stands to represent the biggest superhero invasion of the multiplex on record and a straight-ahead contest between Marvel and DC movie properties. (It does seem likely that one of the movies would choose a different weekend to open to avoid cannibalizing each other’s box office, but for now, that’s simply speculation.)

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” directors (and brothers) Joe and Anthony Russo already have signed on to direct the third standalone film to star Chris Evans as patriotic hero Steve Rogers from a script penned by “Winter Soldier” scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

“Man of Steel” director Zack Snyder is also set to return to helm his super sequel, the follow-up to his 2013 blockbuster that grossed more than $668 million at the worldwide box office. The as-yet-untitled film generated early controversy, however, with the announcement that Affleck as Batman would inherit the cape and cowl from actor Christian Bale.

Equally contentious was the selection of boyish “Social Network” star Jesse Eisenberg, 30, to portray the part of Superman’s traditionally burly, bald and middle-aged arch nemesis Lex Luthor.

“We know the material,” Snyder told Hero Complex in an interview earlier this year. “Unfortunately, the fans don’t know the material. So, we’re casting according to what’s happening in the script. And we’re hoping that leads to enough originality, enough perspective on what we’re doing that you get something fresh and exciting. I understand the canon. I’m not crazy.”

I don't know which will gross more, but I already know which one will be better written and directed. Is it too late to reboot Superman again, minus Zack Snyder and David Goyer? Or teach people at Warner Bros how to make a movie with a modicum of Marvel's quality?

  2. Crabbieappleton says:

“We know the material,” Snyder told Hero Complex in an interview earlier this year. “Unfortunately, the fans don’t know the material."

    Oh SNAP!

    Good for him.

  3. Laer Carroll says:

    Which film? BOTH of course!

  4. John Small says:

Snyder proved he knows nothing about the character of Superman with "Man of Steel." As someone who had been reading Superman comics for nearly 50 years before Snyder's film and the so-called "New 52" books being published by the current regime at DC Comics conspired to ruin the character, I view his comments about what the fans do and do not know with a healthy dose of skepticism (at best).

    • Tucker Davis says:

Now I guess we know why your last name is Small. Snyder's movies are appealing to everyone as was the "300" and even his commercials…See You Tube in 2002=Super Bowl Clydsdale Budweiser Comercial+ "Respect" .Plus as I recall, Man of Steel made $126miillion its first weekend in June do-
mestically. compared to 90+million in the US for the "Captain"…But everyone is entitled to their own opinion….To me most of Marvel's characters at best can only be bastard children of Superman….and
Man of Steel had so much more Human Interest and relating to real people in it;;;;Think a bit outside the box, John……Believe Snyder does…………..Best Regards, Tucker Davis, Berkshire County, Mass.

  5. G. Paxton says:

Despite a wonderful cast, the first Man of Steel was somehow both boring with drawn out, meaningless action sequences and offensive with its unexpected vulgarity (male nudity, Lois Lane's infamous line). Really bad word of mouth followed. Why should we expect anything different with the same team putting together the next one? That said, we're over two years away and Marvel can't find any other spot on the release schedule?

  6. Mike says:

Will there be more killing? If there's anything a Zack Snyder Superman movie needs it's more heroes acting completely unlike themselves. Maybe Batman can get in on the violence this time and just take out the Joker once and for all.

    • DieNu52 says:

Superman was already DESTROYED in Man of Steel with his dark gritty appearance and killer attitude. Wouldn't it be something if all three heroes become killers in the sequel. I dread DREAD watching this sequel see the light of day as if the first one wasn't painful enough to sit through. All three heroes in it will be NOTHING like themselves rather then it being a NON-like Superman alone. Synder talks like we are idiots and don't know that this movie is following the Nu52 source material at DC Comics. Which we all HATE with a passion. As far as I'm concerned Marvel will win everytime because they do right by their charactors and care about the fans. When you stay true to the source material which made people love the charactors in the first place you win everytime. You change it and we will scream and riot to the end. I will NOT be in line for Man of Steel 2. It is kinda sad being the big 3 will be on the big screen for the first time and Wonder Woman included but because of a horrible new direction and bad casting we can't even be excited for it. Not feeling it and will never accept The Nu52 revamping of our once loved JLA.

      • Daisy Davis says:

No one stays truer to the source material than Snyder in case you didn't see "The Watchmen" .. And after your comments ,I'm glad you won't be in line for the next Superman movie .People said a lot of crirical things about Man of Steel but the user rating was B+ and the domestic box office was $126M
the first weekend vs. Captain America at $97M….And don't PLEASE talk about caring about the fans.
Man of Steel had more human interest in it than most action films and believe the female participation was at 44%…No, the school bus scene, the bar scene with the lumberjack, Kevin Costner's death in the thunderstorm, etc…are all memorable moments…Plus it's the way a real
Superman is expected to be=Doing the right thing! . .So don't scream too loud about your views,
because no one really likes or respects a screamer……Best Regards, anyway,…..Daisy

I'm surprised WB isn't opening July 22nd, or in August. WB has a track record of strong openings in the mid- to late-summer period, and they'll have good access to large format screens by that point and a pretty clear path through the foreign markets. X-Men: Apocalypse has Memorial Day staked out, ASM-3 comes two weeks later, and then Marvel's second summer property opens a month later (which presumably would be the origin story of a lesser Marvel character with a major Age of Ultron arc.

  8. JAK says:

Ha Ha Ha to many fanboys/girls in hear all these characters have quality's that no human will ever posess. Why SO Serious? Both of the movies will create a cray weekend and this will be the new trend of Hollywood they finnally figured it out. I guess it's Harry Potter/Avatar Turn Right:)

  9. DieNu52 says:

We don't need to know the material to know that they already messed up the first MAN OF STEEL by making Superman someone to fear rather then look up to as a symbol of hope. Snyder is terrible and has ruined Superman as he WILL destroy Lex Luther and Wonder Woman as well. The casting and direction of this film is HORRIBLE! They are trying too hard to rewrite history and not stay true to the core of these charactors and that is why Marvel has NOTHING to fear. I will be at Captain America 3. DC Comics and Warner Bros has destroyed the whole DC Universe with The Nu52 and this dark gritty direction. HATE IT! Snyder and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves for this tragic mess they are weaving. Give us back the original Heroes with their restored origins and costumes and then it might be a showdown at the box office. With the current direction there is NO CONTEST! Marvel has it in the bag. Marvel respects their fans and the properties they own where DC Comics is clueless and can't make a good outside of Batman.

  10. Daisy Davis says:

You already said your mind on this ….So be quiet , please. We don't want to hear it again…Are you on Marvel's payroll?….I loved "Man of Steel!!!!!!! Yes, I will be first in line and very happy you won't be there……Time to get a life, please………….Daisy

  11. J.D. says:

The bottom line is Superman does not kill. Nobody wants to see Ben as Batman, however they do want to see Wonder Woman.

    • tony says:

uh, wrong. Superman has killed, on multiple occasions. Sure some of them are in different universes, but that's what the film is, an alternate universe.

    • DIENu52 says:

we wanted to see Wonder Woman that is until realizing Gal Gadot would be what we are forced to look at in a costume that isn't even Wonder Woman's. This will blow! Complete crap choices by Snyder one after another.

      • Roderick says:

As much as I love Gal Gadot, she was definitely the wrong choice to play Wonder Woman in my opinion. I thought the role should have went to Malin Akerman who played Silk Spectre in The Watchmen. But that's just my opinion.

  12. All I know is that I'm really bummed out that I have to wait 2 more years for either movie :(

  13. cap1970 says:

Honestly I can’t wait for either movie and hope that in the spirit of competition both of these movies out do themselves.
