‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’ clips spotlight Black Widow, villain

The theatrical release of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is less than two weeks away, and Marvel is counting down with two new, slightly spoiler-y video clips spotlighting Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and the titular villain. (Those who want to be surprised about the Winter Soldier’s identity should stop reading now.)

Set after the events of 2012′s “The Avengers,” the “Captain America: The First Avenger” sequel finds Evans’ hero working for S.H.I.E.L.D., where he’s not sure who he can trust. His past quite literally comes back to haunt him in the form of a close friend turned enemy.

In the newly released featurette, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reflects on the inspiration for the villain, Ed Brubaker’s 2005 “Captain America” story line “Winter Soldier,” which Feige called “one of the best ‘Captain America’ stories in the comics over the past probably 20 years.”

“The Winter Soldier is a deadly assassin,” Feige says in the video (watch it below). “His identity is sort of masked, literally masked in this film. His reputation goes back many, many, many years.”

And even though in the comics the villain’s identity was kept under wraps, leading up to “one of the best reveals in the comics of all time,” Feige is forthcoming with the revelation in the featurette, naming Steve Rogers’ World War II pal Bucky Barnes, with actor Sebastian Stan reprising his role from the first “Captain America” film.

“Steve Rogers has lost everyone, so that unexpected link, it’s a big deal to Steve,” Evans says in the clip.

But Bucky and Cap are no longer on the same team, leaving Cap with a potentially devastating decision.

“You get this really juicy stuff, once Cap realizes who this guy is, of can I fight my best friend, or do I try to save him?” co-producer Nate Moore says in the video, noting that the Winter Soldier is the villain with “the biggest emotional impact.”

Marvel also released a 30-second clip from the film, featuring Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, at her fighting finest against some thugs in an engine room. The scene recalls her famous interrogation beat-down in “The Avengers.”
