“Game of Thrones” scribe George R.R. Martin, “24” star Kiefer Sutherland and “special surprise guests” from the cast of 1985’s “The Goonies” mark some of the highlights of Comic-Con 2014’s Thursday programming, which was officially released earlier today.
Coming on the heels of this morning’s news that “Game of Thrones” is poised to to take the Emmys by storm with a pack-leading 19 nominations, recent Twitter convert George R.R. Martin, on whose novels the lavish HBO fantasy is based, will no doubt be in high spirits when he sits down with moderator William Christensen (Avatar Press publisher) to discuss “Thrones” (for which he’s scripted several episodes), other works and his newest project, the “In the House of the Worm” comic book series. The conversation will be held in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel from 4 to 5 p.m.
Also, earlier in the day: Jack’s back … again! Kiefer Sutherland will be returning to Comic-Con as he did to television screens earlier this year to reflect on “Live Another Day,” the comeback season of Jack Bauer and “24,” which will conclude next week. There will also be an exclusive sneak peek at a Blu-ray and DVD featurette, “Worlds Collide,” which goes behind the scenes of the making of the latest season. The screening and discussion will be moderated by the show’s executive producer Jon Cassar, and Sutherland will be taking questions from fans. It’s all in the San Diego Convention Center’s Ballroom 20 from 10 to 11 a.m.
Later in the evening, “Goonies” fans will get a chance to yell “Goonies never say die!” (or, if you prefer, “I’m taking them all back”) at members of the original cast, as Clare Kramer (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer“) moderates a panel of cast members and special surprise guests, including a Q&A session. The panel comes in the wake of director Richard Donner’s announcement earlier this year that “Goonies 2” is a go. Might Mikey make an appearance? Chunk? Data? The answers are in the Indigo Ballroom at 6 p.m.
Other big names hitting the convention center on opening day? Betty White (“The Golden Girls,” “Hot in Cleveland”) will be appearing at the “Legends of TV Land” panel (Indigo Ballroom, 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.), which features a sneak peek of the animated episode of TV Land’s original sitcom “Hot in Cleveland,” airing July 30.
The stars of Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful,” including Josh Hartnett (Ethan Chandler), Reeve Carney (Dorian Gray) and Harry Treadaway (Victor Frankenstein), which just finished its first season run, will also be on hand, in a panel moderated by Emmy Award-nominated actress and host Aisha Tyler (“Archer,” “The Talk“), followed by a Q&A session with the stars. That’s in Ballroom 20 at 6 p.m.
Plus, those looking to satiate their needs for a new “Star Wars” adventure, before “Star Wars: Episode VII” hits theaters in late 2015, will get an exclusive preview of Disney XD’s highly anticipated “Star Wars Rebels” series, which premieres this fall. Executive producers Dave Filoni and Simon Kinberg as well as series stars Freddie Prinze Jr., Vanessa Marshall, Steve Blum, Tiya Sircar, and Taylor Gray will be on hand in Room 6BCF at 6 p.m.
Thursday’s action will also include several “Batman” 75th anniversary panels, including an appearance from Kevin Smith at the DC Digital Comics panel (Room 6DE at 2 p.m.), as well as the cast of “Sharknado 2” (Room 6BCF at 7:15 p.m.) and appearances from the stars of CBS’ “Under the Dome” and “Scorpion” (beginning 11:15 a.m. in Ballroom 20).
