Usually when a studio has a surprise to unveil at their Comic-Con panel, they save it for the end to keep people guessing. But Warner Bros. tossed out that playbook for the packed crowd at its Hall H presentation and pulled out the big guns right off the bat, so to speak, offering fans an early, albeit brief, look at its much-anticipated superhero mash-up “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

From the moment the presentation began, it was clear that something major was afoot, as curtains pulled back to reveal jumbo-sized screens wrapping around the front of Hall H. As concept art from “Batman v. Superman” began flashing on the screens, fans, not surprisingly, erupted.

Then moderator Chris Hardwick brought the film’s director, Zack Snyder, to the stage. With the film still early in its production, it’s anyone’s guess how much has actually been shot, but Snyder — who had just tweeted the first image of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, strikingly a suitably fierce pose and wielding a sword — assured the crowd that he was pleased with the way things were heading. “I couldn’t be happier with the way everything’s going,” he said. “Talent, sets, special effects — it’s going amazingly well.”

With fans audibly clamoring to see something, Snyder, on cue, rolled a brief teaser. In it, Ben Affleck’s Batman stands on a rooftop on a foreboding, rainy night, shining the Bat Signal into the stormy sky. Henry Cavill’s Superman suddenly appears in the clouds, floating in the center of the Bat Signal’s light and glaring down with glowing eyes. The two superheroes engage in a momentous super-stare-down and … cut.

At that point, Snyder brought Affleck, Cavill, and Gadot onto the stage, where they stood for a minute and soaked in the applause.

Somewhat surprisingly, none of the cast members said anything. Then again, with buzz around the film already super-sized almost two years before its scheduled May 6, 2016, release, they probably didn’t need to.
