The new trailer for “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” has arrived, and the apes and the humans appear to be on the cusp of a war that doesn’t promise to end well for mankind.
The trailer for the sequel to Rupert Wyatt’s 2011 hit, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” hints at a world decimated by disease and conflict, but the ranks of the simian followers of Andy Serkis’ genetically evolved ape Caesar — glimpsed near the end of the clip — seem strong.
The new footage centers mostly on a packed throng of survivors listening to a speech that sounds like a call to action: “We’ve been through hell together. We spent four years — four years — fighting that virus and another four fighting each other. It was chaos. But you all know what we’re up against. And I want you to know, it’s not just about power, it’s about giving us the hope to rebuild, to reclaim the world that we lost.”
Stars Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman and Keri Russell are all glimpsed, but it’s the haunting image of performance capture master Serkis’ Caesar staring forward into the camera that resonates. (At one point, Clarke’s Malcolm can be heard demanding, “I need to speak to Caesar.”)
The clip is the latest promotional piece released in an effort to stoke excitement for next summer’s blockbusters — Warner Bros. recently issued trailers for three of its major tentpole titles, “Godzilla,” “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Jupiter Ascending.”
“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” directed by Matt Reeves (“Let Me In,” “Cloverfield”) opens in theaters July 11.
