‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ trailer offers glimpse of ape army

March 31, 2014 | 11:02 a.m.

A new TV spot for “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” offers a first look at the menacing ape army.

The trailer, which premiered during Sunday night’s season finale of “The Walking Dead,” begins with an ominous human voice-over.

“You know the scary thing about ‘em?” the narration begins. “They don’t need power, lights, heat. Nothing. That’s their advantage, that’s what makes them stronger.”

The teaser, which runs 43 seconds, shows the apes on horseback and, presumably, preparing for battle. Watch it in the video below.

“Dawn” is set a decade after the events of 2011’s blockbuster “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” in which Caesar, a genetically evolved chimpanzee portrayed by Andy Serkis through performance capture technology, leads a host of simians to freedom. “Dawn” picks up in a post-apocalyptic future where humankind has been all but destroyed by disease and conflict, and Caesar’s apes have started a forest colony — the beginnings of a new civilization. Conflict arises when a group of human survivors cross paths with the ape colony.

In addition to Serkis, the film stars Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell among others.

Director Matt Reeves (“Let Me In,” “Cloverfield”), who took over from “Rise” director Rupert Wyatt, is slated to helm a third installment in the franchise.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is due in theaters July 11. What do you think of the new teaser? Let us know in the comments.

Interesting. Like the new story idea. Not enough of the trailer for me to make a decision about the move but for 'Cesar fans it looks good.

As a middle-age, baby-booming fan of the original film series and someone who has just recently sold off his big collection of all things apes, I feel like a kid again in anticipation of this one. And if the RISE was a thinly-disguised remake of CONQUEST and this one does the same for BATTLE, that means the third may be the one we're all looking forward to… a redo of the 1968 classic that started it all!

  3. JeffnDallas says:

I saw this preview this weekend in IMAX as I was there to see "Noah". This movie actually looks more promising than the movie (Noah) I was there to see. Hmmmm, maybe Noah shouldn't have let the apes on the ark, now that I think about it…lol ;-)

Yes, I'll definitely be checking this one out!

  4. Gregg says:

    The teaser is too short.

Looks Okay, English Version, Not So Sure About. Chinese Version Is A Little Better.. My OPIN… Trailers Don't Really Show Too Much Anyway.. Have To Wait And See………

  7. Clifford says:
