The first teaser for “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” is out, offering a glimpse of a reality-defying action scene featuring Shailene Woodley’s heroine Tris.

“Insurgent,” the second film in the movie franchise based on the bestselling YA novels by Veronica Roth, follows Beatrice “Tris” Prior, a girl who discovers she doesn’t fit neatly into one of five rigidly divided societal factions in a dystopian future version of Chicago, but rather has aptitude for multiple factions — a dangerous trait known as divergence.

In the first film “Divergent,” which drew more than $288 million at the international box office earlier this year, Tris tried to hide her abilities and joined Dauntless, the faction based on bravery, where she met love interest Four (Theo James). But now, war looms between the factions, and Tris and her allies are fugitives from the power-hungry Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet).

A warning to the uninitiated: Spoilers lie ahead.

In the minute-long teaser for “Insurgent,” a newly shorn Tris sees her mother Natalie Prior (Ashley Judd) trapped in a burning house — an impossible scene since Natalie died in the events of the first film. The house lifts from the ground and launches away, and Tris leaps from the top of a skyscraper to save her mother.

It’s unclear whether the scene is part of a fear landscape (a drug-induced hallucination that plays on a characters’ fears), a dream or something else altogether.

The film, slated for release March 20, is directed by Robert Schwentke ( “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” “Flightplan,” “Red”). In addition to Woodley, James, Winslet and Judd, the movie features Ansel Elgort, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Q, Keiynan Lonsdale, Mekhi Phifer, Miles Teller, Ray Stevenson, Jai Courtney and newcomers Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer.

The third book in Roth’s dystopian adventure series, “Allegiant,” will be split into two films, due out in 2016 and 2017.
