The first trailer for “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” is out, offering a glimpse of Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) in action as they prepare to fight back against the cruel autocrat who tried to kill them in the first film.

“Insurgent,” based on the second novel in Veronica Roth’s bestselling YA trilogy, follows young heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior,  a girl who discovers she doesn’t fit neatly into one of five rigidly divided societal factions in a dystopian future version of Chicago, but rather has aptitude for multiple factions — a dangerous trait known as divergence.

In the first film, “Divergent,” which drew more than $288 million at the international box office earlier this year, Tris tried to hide her abilities and joined Dauntless, the faction based on bravery, where she met love interest Four (James). But now, war looms between the factions, and Tris and her allies are fugitives from the ruthless Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet).

In the trailer, the fugitives meet potential allies — the so-called “Factionless” led by new character Evelyn (Naomi Watts) — who have been banished from society and live in poverty in the outskirts of civilization.

“Jeanine claims you’re all dangerous insurgents,” Evelyn tells Four in the trailer. “If we were to combine forces, we’d be unstoppable.”

The insurgents appear to do just that; the trailer features plenty of fighting, gunfire, ziplining and sprinting through futuristic hallways. There’s also a glimpse of a steamy scene featuring Four and a shirtless Tris kissing.

The trailer reveals several instances in which the film appears to diverge from the book, including the introduction of a mysterious box that proves to be the object of Jeanine’s obsession.

“You found it,” she says to an unseen person. “The future our people deserve.”

In the film, Jeanine’s efforts to unlock the mysterious object, which features the symbols of each of the five factions, are the motivation behind her hunt for divergent people.

“She’s testing divergents, searching for the one who can open it,” Tris’ brother Caleb (“The Fault in Our Stars” costar Ansel Elgort) tells her.

And, of course, Tris is “the one,” and falls subject to Jeanine’s testing, which includes a glass room and horrifying tubes that drop from the ceiling to connect to the young heroine’s body and a simulation in which Tris must fight a version of herself.

“I’m not going to fight you,” Tris tells Jeanine.

“Of course you’re not,” Jeanine answers patronizingly. “You’re going to fight you.”

The film, slated for release March 20, is directed by Robert Schwentke (“The Time Traveler’s Wife,” “Flightplan,” “Red”). In addition to Woodley, James, Winslet and Elgort, the movie features Ashley Judd, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Q, Keiynan Lonsdale, Mekhi Phifer, Miles Teller, Ray Stevenson, Jai Courtney and Octavia Spencer.

The third book in Roth’s dystopian adventure series, “Allegiant,” will be split into two films, due out in 2016 and 2017.
