School’s out for summer — except in the futuristic world of the upcoming sci-fi film “Ender’s Game,” based on the 1985 novel by Orson Scott Card. In the film, hostile aliens known as the Formics have attacked Earth, and the planet’s military organization, the International Fleet, is marshaling and training a new generation of young soldiers to continue the fight.

A new promotional video for the film, titled “Battle School Needs You” and styled as a military recruiting tool, shows Col. Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and a group of young soldiers preparing for war. Among their ranks is Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy but strategically brilliant boy who could be the fleet’s next great hope.

“We need the best and the brightest to lead,” Ford says in the minute-long video, embedded below. “If you succeed, you will be remembered as a hero.” With its propaganda vibe and exhortation to “Enlist Now!,” the video recalls Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film “Starship Troopers.”

The video also plugs an online Battle School aptitude test, through which fans can evaluate their own worthiness to join the fleet. A Facebook account is required to log in.

The video and test land amid a swirl of controversy surrounding Card and his political views. Although his novel on which the film is based is highly regarded, Card is a vocal opponent of gay rights, and his views have been met with considerable backlash. The gay-rights organization Geeks Out recently called for a boycott of the film, and last week Lionsgate issued a statement distancing itself from Card.

On Thursday afternoon in San Diego, “Ender’s Game” will have its big panel at Comic-Con International in Hall H, featuring a sneak peak at the film and a Q&A with cast members Ford, Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin, as well as director Gavin Hood.

“Ender’s Game” opens Nov. 1.

I thank you for commenting at the appropriate forum (NOT!!!), I respect your opinions and views on this matter, and I support the film, BUT, please comment on this subject somewhere else! I also support LGBT, but in a more civilized fashion. For example, by commenting on this subject on OTHER forums, NOT news websites! Lesson learned? Good!
