‘Excalibur,’ Bela Lugosi feature in Nuart’s Midnight Movies salute

Stock up on coffee and adjust your sleep schedules SoCal movie fans, L.A.’s Nuart Theatre has some real springtime treats included in its upcoming schedule of midnight movies.
“Excalibur” “This Is Spinal Tap,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “Death Becomes Her” are to be playing late nights over the course of the next few months.
The lineup also features a March 22 screening of a restored version of 1932′s “White Zombie,” starring Bela Lugosi as a hypnotist and voodoo master who attempts to initiate a woman into the world of the undead.

Made by brothers Victor and Edward Halperin (their 1933 follow-up, “Supernatural,” is playing UCLA’s Festival of Preservation on March 30) “White Zombie” was considered shocking and racy in its day, and this horror classic, once thought to be lost, still packs a punch.
A knowing throwback to the Eurosleaze films of the ’60s and ’70s, Xan Cassavetes’ new “Kiss of The Damned,” a stylish and erotic supernatural story featuring Josephine de la Baume, Milo Ventimiglia and Roxane Mesquida, is to get a special midnight show on May 3.
Other insomniac specials include midnight shows of “Reservoir Dogs” on March 29, and a new digital version of John Boorman’s “Excalibur” on April 5. “The Big Lebowski” abides April 19, “This Is Spinal Tap” plays April 26 and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” screens May 10.
On May 17, there will be a 350millimeter screening of Robert Zemeckis’ “Death Becomes Her,” which has gained something of a cult following of late for its supernatural tug-of-war between Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn. Bruce Willis also stars. The film won an Academy Award for visual effects.
Although “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” plays every Saturday at midnight, on April 12, the local live shadow cast group Sins O’ the Flesh is to appear for a 35-millimeter of the oddball follow-up to the cult favorite “Shock Treatment.”
Tickets for midnight shows are $10, $9 for students with valid ID.
