‘Fantastic Four’ trailer shows off quartet’s powers and villain Victor von Doom

April 20, 2015 | 12:47 p.m.

A new trailer for the “Fantastic Four” reboot is out, offering a closer look at the titular heroes’ superpowers as well as the villainous Doctor Doom.

At the head of the “Fantastic” quartet is Miles Teller’s Reed Richards, a scientist who “knows answers to questions we don’t even know to ask yet,” says Dr. Franklin Storm (Reg Cathey).

An experiment with interdimensional travel endows Reed and his team with superhuman abilities. Reed gets super-stretchy powers; Kate Mara, who plays Dr. Storm’s daughter Sue, can make herself invisible; Michael B. Jordan’s Johnny Storm can turn into a human fireball; and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) becomes a rock-like giant known as the Thing.

The film’s origin story diverges from the Marvel comics, in which the four are endowed with their powers after being exposed to cosmic rays during a scientific space mission.

Here’s the official synopsis from 20th Century Fox:

“Fantastic Four,” a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

The enemy is the villainous Victor von Doom, played in the film by Toby Kebbell (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”).

“You opened a door you don’t know how to close,” his voice intones. “You don’t know anything about what’s coming.”

“What is coming?” Reed Richards asks.

“Doom,” he replies as the trailer shows his hooded visage.

The film, helmed by “Chronicle” director Josh Trank, comes 10 years after Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis and Ioan Gruffudd brought Marvel’s cosmic superheroes to the big screen. “The Fantastic Four” is set for release Aug. 7; a sequel,  “Fantastic Four 2,” is in the works.
