Actor Josh Brolin is joining the cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” giving voice to the villain Thanos in the cosmic adventure from writer-director James Gunn.

Due to open in theaters Aug. 1, “Guardians” follows roguish antihero Peter Quill (played by a pumped-up Chris Pratt) on the run from a villain known as Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) after he comes into possession of a mysterious orb. Before long, Quill is allied with a rogues’ gallery that includes a gun-toting creature named Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper; Zoe Saldana’s green alien assassin Gamora; Bautista’s vengeful Drax the Destroyer; and the tree-like humanoid Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel.

The Guardians first appeared in “Marvel Super-Heroes” No. 18 in 1969, and in the early 1990s, the team headlined its own comic series that ran for 62 issues. But for the new movie, Gunn took a fresh approach to the characters and the mythology, fashioning a story that, like the other Marvel films, stands on its own but also connects to the studio’s other franchises, including “The Avengers.” (Fans will remember that the death-loving supervillain Thanos appeared on screen during the credits sequence of Joss Whedon’s 2012 blockbuster.)

In addition to the five guardians who make up the squad of misfits, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” cast also features Michael Rooker as Yondu, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Benicio del Toro as the Collector, Glenn Close as Nova Prime Rael and John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, while “Doctor Who” star Karen Gillan plays the sadistic villain Nebula, who has an interesting relationship to Thanos.

In a recent interview with Hero Complex, the actress said she shaved her head for the role, saying goodbye to her signature red tresses, and underwent rigorous stunt training – or, in her words, “action hero boot camp.”

“She’s got a cybernetic arm, a cybernetic eye, she’s completely blue and bald, and she’s like a master of weaponry,” Gillan said of her character. “Whenever I would walk around, people were literally gasping at me, and I was like, ‘Sure, this is worth five hours [in the makeup chair] for this.’ “

The role is a significant foray into superhero cinema for actor Brolin, who had been considered a frontrunner to play Batman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” before the role went to actor Ben Affleck.

In an interview with The Envelope, The Times’ site devoted to all things awards season, Brolin talked about his familial connection to Batman — his father appeared on the 1960s TV show starring Adam West — and also his surprise at the outpouring of Internet vitriol that greeted the news that Affleck had won the role.

“You read stuff like, ‘I wish Ben Affleck would die,’ ” Brolin said. “It’s Armageddon because he’s going to play Batman. What’s happening? You can’t listen to any of it. It’s like a kid in a cereal aisle screaming, ‘I want Froot Loops!’ You just let him have his tantrum and scream it out.

“What I liked was the logline: ‘An older, grizzly Batman …’ ” the actor continued. “That was interesting to me. I haven’t seen that… I’ll still watch it to see how grizzled Affleck turns out.”

The only way The Guardians of the Galaxy can beat Thanos is with the help of Mr.Macuta and Dr.Shivagoo.There is no way Mr.Macuta can be controlled without Dr.Shivagoo's death winds. Thanos always had issues with Macuta's brain waving blasts and interior organs demolition rays.I bet the Banner knows this and will recruit Mr.Macuta and Dr.Shivagoo for the last battle scenes.
