This weekend James Gunn, the director of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” gave audiences yet another reason to anticipate the Marvel space adventure’s Aug. 1 release:

Nathan Fillion, of “Firefly” and “Castle” fame, will have a small part, much to the delight of sci-fi TV fans everywhere. But take note: It won’t be the one that’s been discussed in the rumor mill:

Even before this auspicious addition, the cast for “Guardians of the Galaxy” was stacked. “Guardians” follows roguish antihero Peter Quill (played by a pumped-up Chris Pratt) on the run from a villain known as Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) after he comes into possession of a mysterious orb. Before long, Quill is allied with a rogues’ gallery that includes a gun-toting creature named Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper; Zoe Saldana’s green alien assassin Gamora; Dave Bautista’s vengeful Drax the Destroyer; and the tree-like humanoid Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel.

In addition to the five guardians who make up the squad of misfits, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” cast also features Michael Rooker as Yondu, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Benicio del Toro as the Collector, Karen Gillan as the sadistic villain Nebula, John C. Reilly as  Rhomann Dey, and Josh Brolin as Thanos, the death-loving supervillain first glimpsed in the credit sequence of Joss Whedon’s 2012 blockbuster “The Avengers.”

Fillion’s role may be cameo-sized in “Guardians” but the outsized adoration from fans follows him wherever he goes. He told Hero Complex in 2011 (in his customary deadpan style): “When I go to a sci-fi convention, oh God, it’s the closest thing to being a rock star I will ever know in this life. I want to be a rock star, don’t you? It’s a good thing to be, a rock star.”

Yep, good work if you can get it. What do you expect from Fillion’s cameo? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

If I had to guess, I'd go with him playing the brother of Thanos.

Nathan Fillion IS a sci-fi rock star. I have been a fan of his since "One Life to Live". I loved him in Percy Jackson–he provided just the right amount of snark to his role. Firefly, nothing more needs to be said. This guy is great.

Starlord walks by Fillion in a bar and says – "What's up, Mal?"

    'nuff said.

  4. Andrew Fadel says:

Captain Malcom “Mal” Reynolds in Firefly… Firefly is a Joss Whedon vehicle… Joss Whedon pretty much runs Marvel now… Possible crossover cameo? Just saying… :)

    Cosmo the Space Dog

    Nova!!!!!!!!!!

In the interests of context, mention should be made here of Fillion's roles in two of Gunn's earlier flicks: The 2006 sci-fi/horror/comedy "Slither" and the 2010 superhero spoof "Super."

Both films are quite good, if more than a little twisted.

It would be interesting to integrate the marvel universe with a little more realistic fire fly touch with full crew of Serenity..but you have to resurrect Alan Tudyk as Hoban "Wash" Washburne: The pilot of the ship.
