Professor Albus Dumbledore (Richard Harris and Michael Gambon) - Headmaster. Known as the greatest wizard of his time, Dumbledore spent many decades overseeing Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (where he previously taught transfigurations). Aside from his magical prowess, he is best known for defeating Gellert Grindelwald, the second most dangerous wizard of all time, and founding the Order of the Phoenix to lead the resistance against Lord Voldermort. Always close with Harry Potter, he entrusted his mentee to help him bring down Voldemort once and for all. However, Dumbledore was killed by Severus Snape before their mission was complete, leaving Potter to finish the quest on his own. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody (Brendan Gleeson) - Though it was a cover persona, Moody became Hogwarts' defence against the dark arts professor after a distinguished career as an auror (a wizard who battles evil, mostly for the Ministry of Magic). That particular Moody was later found to be an impostor. The real Moody returned to continue to fight evil as a member of the Order of the Phoenix, also earning repute as being the greatest auror ever. He met his end in an ambush/duel with Lord Voldemort while protecting Harry Potter. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith) - Transfiguration. Gryffindor’s stern headmistress, McGonagall is tough on the outside, but behind her green robes, tartan swatches and pointy hat, she is sweet through and through. Proving to be one of Harry’s strongest allies and fiercest protectors, McGonagall (who is known for transforming into a cat) helps guide him along and even lets him break the rules once in awhile. Later, when Voldemort returns, she does everything she can as a member of the Order of the Phoenix to keep the school safe, even if it means putting herself in danger. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Pomona Sprout (Miriam Margolyes) - A onetime student at Hogwarts, the usually happy Sprout is professor of herbology and the head of the Hufflepuff house. She is also a skilled potions maker and the favorite teacher of Neville Longbottom. She is loyal and a capable defender of Hogwarts and the students there. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) -- Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic, Umbridge carried many titles during her short tenure at Hogwarts. She was Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and Hogwarts High Inquisitor, working to get Dumbledore and any other teacher she deemed unworthy thrown out, and she was briefly headmistress. She was later relieved of that post, traumatized by centaurs and returned to the Ministry. She wore one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, but it was never established whether she was a lackey for the dark lord -- or just a bad person. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) - He was the potions master, defence against the dark arts professor and headmaster of Hogwarts. He seemed to instantly dislike Harry Potter specifically, but also had a disdain for most students that were not Slytherin, the house that he oversaw. A half-blood wizard, he was known as one of the more reliable and powerful death eaters (followers of Lord Voldemort), but a past connection to Harry Potter made all of his actions mysterious. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Quirinus Quirrell (Ian Hart) - Quirrell began his teaching career as professor of muggle studies at Hogwarts. He later became defence against the dark arts teacher after taking a year to travel abroad. He met and began to serve Lord Voldemort during his sabbatical, eventually allowing the dark wizard to share his body with him. He was killed by Harry Potter. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Filius Flitwick (Warwick Davis) - Flitwick, who by all appearances seems to be half-goblin, was the head of Ravenclaw and the professor of charms. His look changed dramatically, from a grizzled to a more studious appearance, during the series. He was able to perform powerful charms, as evidenced by his selection to be a marshal at the Tri-Wizard tournament, and he was a skilled fighter who helped erect many of the spells that protected Hogwarts from Voldemort. Flitwick was also conductor of the school choir and a staunch defender of Hogwarts and its students. (Warner Bros.)Link
Madame Rolanda Hooch (Zoë Wanamaker) - Rolanda Hooch is the flying instructor and quidditch coach/referee at Hogwarts. A sometimes impatient teacher, she apparently participated in the Great War and really likes her Silver Arrow broomstick. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) - defence against the dark arts. As a teen at Hogwarts, Lupin was best known for running with a pack of pranksters known as the Marauders, including James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew. Those same friends helped him cope with a very big secret; he was a werewolf. Years later he returned to the school to teach defense classes and became friends with James’ son Harry. Although Lupin, a member of the Order of the Phoenix, left his teaching post after just one year, the two remained close and fought together in the second wizarding war. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Horace E. F. Slughorn (Jim Broadbent) - As a student, Slughorn gravitated toward potions while a member of the house of Slytherin. He returned to teach as the potions master for more than 50 years before retiring; he was also the head of Slytherin and a member of the Order of the Phoenix. He is known as something of a schmoozer who likes to be associated with the famous and the powerful. He was coaxed out of retirement after shunning society with the rising threat of Voldemort looming. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Sybill Patricia Trelawney (Emma Thompson) - Professor of divination, Trelawney was said to possess the inner eye, which let her see into the future. Daughter of a famous seer, Trelawney predicted the return of Lord Voldemort and prophesied to Albus Dumbledore about the child who would destroy him. Despite doubts about her ability and attempts to have her fired (by Dolores Umbridge), Trelawney participated in the Battle at Hogwarts, defending the school. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) - A half-giant wizard, Hagrid is professor of care of magical creatures and keeper of the keys and grounds of Hogwarts. He watched over Harry Potter when Harry was a baby, getting him safely to his Muggle family, the Dursleys. He was set up by Voldemort (Tom Riddle) long ago, but has since been back in the good graces of the school and the wizarding community. Loved by the students and a staunch defender of Hogwarts, Hagrid is also a member of the Order of the Phoenix. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh) - defence against the dark arts. Lockhart loved the spotlight -- so much that he was willing to lie to stay in it. With his charming smile and impressive accomplishments (like claiming to cure a werewolf), he had everyone fooled. In reality, Lockhart would simply steal other wizards’ works by wiping their memories. When Harry Potter and his friends discovered he was a fraud, he attacked, but his memory charm backfired, rendering him incapacitated. He never recovered, living out his days at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. (Warner Bros.)Link
Argus Filch (David Bradley) - Filch was not a teacher but often educated the students on the rules of Hogwarts. As caretaker, he delighted in handing out punishments to anyone breaking curfew or roaming in forbidden places. Filch is a squib; he was born to magical parents, but cannot perform magic. (Warner Bros.)Link
Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith), Professor Dumbeldore (Richard Harris), Professor Snape (Alan Rickman) and Professor Slughorn (Jim Broadbent). (Warner Bros.)Link

The faculty at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry not only is tasked with enriching young minds — in the final installment in the film series, the professors also must face off against Voldemort and his loyal Death Eaters in order to help protect the student body and all the good people of the wizarding and Muggle worlds. To honor their dedication and bravery, we celebrate some of the most influential educators to walk the halls of Hogwarts (though, to be clear, we’ve also included some more slippery high-profile types too).
