‘Hercules’ trailer: Dwayne Johnson battles beasties for Brett Ratner
Dwayne Johnson’s fearsome hero is burdened by his birthright in the new trailer for “Hercules,” Brett Ratner’s coming sword-and-sandals adventure due in theaters this summer.
Ratner’s film about the mythical hero hits theaters July 25 and is based on Steve Moore’s series for Radical Comics; Johnson stars as the son of Zeus who aids the King of Thrace in his quest to topple a fearsome warlord.
While he simply seeks to be a husband and a father, Hercules finds himself fending off plenty of mythical beasties after a tragic turn of events sets him on a path to revenge.
The movie’s impressive supporting cast includes Ian McShane, John Hurt, Joseph Fiennes and Rufus Sewell, though the trailer emphasizes the film’s CG spectacle with Hercules battling fantastic creatures.
At one point, Hurt’s Cotys tells him, “A man with a cause can be stronger than a god.”
“The one thing that I do like is that by the end of a movie, that my character gets better,” Johnson told Hero Complex of the roles he prefers in a 2010 interview. “It doesn’t have to be a great man, just a better man. It can be off-kilter a bit, not right down the middle, that’s fine. If he gets better in some way, that is important to me.”
