Hugh Jackman is set to return to the big screen as his comic book alter-ego Wolverine in May’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” but over the weekend, the actor tackled the character from a different, more musical, angle.
In an appearance on a BBC radio program, Jackman gamely belted out a new set of lyrics to the song “Who Am I?” from the musical “Les Miserables” — the Australian actor was nominated for an Oscar for his turn as Jean Valjean in Tom Hooper’s cinematic adaptation of the long-running production. (Jackman, of course, is an accomplished song and dance man who is preparing to return for the fourth time as host of the upcoming Tony Awards in June.)
The roughly two-minute spoof centered on the conflict between Jackman’s identity as the mutant superhero and his own true self. There is a mention of “Future Past,” too.
Although Jackman has publicly stated that he realizes his run as Logan will come to an end one day, he has no plans to leave the character behind just yet. After the May 23 release of “Future Past,” which is based on the acclaimed “X-Men” comics penned by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in the early 1980s and marks director Bryan Singer’s return to directing the mutant franchise, Jackman will film a sequel to this past summer’s “The Wolverine.”
“The Wolverine” director James Mangold is set to return for the follow-up, due in theaters March 3, 2017. The story for the sequel is being kept under wraps, but “X-Men” veteran Lauren Shuler Donner is to produce the film.
“The Wolverine” has gotten $413 million at box offices worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing “X-Men” film to date.
