‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ trailer debuts during MTV Movie Awards

April 14, 2013 | 10:50 p.m.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” doesn’t open until Nov. 22, but the official trailer for the new film debuted Sunday night during the MTV Movie Awards, where fan-favorite film “The Avengers” was among the evening’s big winners.

“Catching Fire” sees newly minted Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence reprise her starring role as Katniss Everdeen, who finds herself and her fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) returning to the arena for a special champions’ edition of the cruel games, in which teens are pitted against one another in a battle to the death.

The not quite two-and-a-half-minute clip begins with Katniss and Peeta being introduced as the victors of the 74th annual Hunger Games, Elizabeth Banks’ garishly adorned Effie Trinket by their side. Donald Sutherland’s sinister President Snow is then glimpsed in conversation with Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Plutarch Heavensbee ruminating over the way that Katniss has become a “beacon of hope” to the oppressed citizens that live in service to the wealthy Capitol.

Which, of course, means, “She has to be eliminated.”

“Catching Fire,” directed by Francis Lawrence, is the second installment in a planned quartet of films based on the bestselling young adult book trilogy by Suzanne Collins; the third book, “Mockingjay,” will be split into two movies.

The first film in the franchise — last March’s “The Hunger Games” — earned more than $686 million at the worldwide box office.

What did you think of the new trailer? Will Lawrence be able to improve on what writer-director Gary Ross achieved with the first film? Tell us in the comments below.

Why would you throw in a spoiler that the trailer was obviously trying to avoid showing?
