“The Hunger Games” trailer is out, and it promises action and heartache, set in a world that’s both gritty and surreal.

The film’s heroine, Katniss Everdeen, portrayed by “X-Men: First Class” and “Winter’s Bone” actress Jennifer Lawrence, is a  teenager who volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in a cruel competition of children forced to fight to the death for the amusement of the wealthy and the political gain of the powerful. The previously released movie stills for “The Hunger Games,” which hits theaters March 23, drew some ire from fans, who complained the cast was too old and too pretty to play the starving children of the post-apocalyptic world envisioned by Suzanne Collins, the author of the bestselling novels on which the film is based.

But fans of the novels can exhale; Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta Mellark in the film, introduced the trailer Monday on “Good Morning America,” and it provides a glimpse of Panem that is far less shiny and clean than posters promoting it. The trailer is culled from footage of the first half of the film alone, providing only a few seconds from the battle arena. But it does show Katniss and her best friend Gale Hawthorne, played by Liam Hemsworth, hunting in the woods; a makeup-caked Effie Trinket, played by Elizabeth Banks, addressing District 12; Cinna, played by Lenny Kravitz, and Haymitch, played by Woody Harrelson, advising their tributes; and Katniss and Peeta training before the games.

Take a look at the trailer below.

Looks epic, good choice to play Katniss, Jennifer Lawrence is a great Actress. It should be amazing, I've read all three books and cant wait to see how they will show all whats involved in the books on film.

  2. Tani says:

    Oh my…
I cant wait. To some extent I wish they hadn't shown so much in the trailer but then again being human if they hadn't I probably would have wanted more. After this I'm optimistic that the films will do the book series justice. Roll on 2012..

Why would you say that!!?? Some ppl haven't read Mockingjay yet!!!!
    You're spoiling it!!!

  8. Sydney says:

I am glad they actually chose decent actors to play the roles in this film. Having a cast full of hollywood veterans (oscar nominated) is so much better than having a cast full of newbies. Also I am glad they filmed it in many different perspectives, this way you can see what the people in district 12, the capitol, and the control room are doing while the games are going on. It will show new perspectives you don't get to see in the book.

  9. Paige says:

I read the complete series 6 times….I can see it's a shame MGM didn't get the rights…and Yates isn't directing…sad but hoping for the best.

  19. AaronT says:

You had absolutely no reason for posting this other than as a spoiler to people who haven't finished the series. I'd ask you to post a spoiler warning next time, except for the fact that you did so intentionally and clearly don't care.

  20. Dominic Auger says:

Nothing new under the sun. It's a american version of 2000's japaness movie "Battle Royal", where children fight to the death on an Island, until only one survive. I don't think I want towatch the same story again.

  30. Khaycee says:

Ive been reading the Hunger Games and i love it :) Even if people say that similar stories have been written, The Hunger Games was wriiten in a way that grasped me and got me wanting for more :) Additionally, it focuses on different themes as well, touching topics such as politics, justice, poverty, society problems, battle of the strongest people, love, and how one person can really start something great and overwhelming that can influence the many to fight for their rights. :)

  31. Makayla (D) Best says:

hm… I've only read the first book, (im not really interested in reading the rest) but this really was a cool book, and everything I've seen so far (as far as appearance wise) everything is just as i sorta thought it would look, hey maybe this won't be a total disaster like the Percy Jackson movie! Yea maybe the plot wont be twisted, and the characters might be relative to what their suppose to be like (sorry got a lot of anger toward the stupid directors of PJ……. i dont even think they read the book….)

  32. Syd says:

I cant wait for this to come to theaters!!! it looks awesome

  33. Jen says:

This is so scary. I've never read the books but it's frightening to think of kids and teenagers trying to reinact this stuff on their own.

  34. janet says:

read the first book and am on the 2nd. loved the first one and i am enjoying the second. looking forward to reading the last book in the series and can not wait for the movie to come out in march. what a thrill ride the movie trailer looks. i hope the movie does the book justice. suzanne collins has a great imagination.

  35. Alicia says:

I can’t wait until the movies come out. I know you all think that the movie should be a certain way and this is only because our imaginations are all so different, the books are great but i was a little disappointed on how the third one ended.

  36. sarah says:

I only wish they made more books :(
